I chose the largest giant, well we chose each other.

After accomplishing 250mph naked, I was interested in trying the fairy thing.  although I was approached by another, I felt I was bringing a lot more to the table then they were, so I sought out Larry to answer a few questions and bounce a few of my crazy ideas off him.  He ended up being a great coach and I have talk to him just about every morning for the last few years.  So many ideas, so little time.

So we took my Naked street bike and put some stock aftermarket fairies on it, staying in the Modified class (for streetbikes), we could only do some minor changes like closing up some holes. We were very limited by the MPS rules, even the tail had to remain short and was cut down from stock dimensions.  Even though we were competing for tarck records against bikes in the Altered class (APS) [designed for purpose built race bikes] having rules that require major alterations from the Modified class like a tail section much longer and aerodynamic, we came up with a plan that would give us a fighting chance.  Without Larry's coaching and guidance, we would have not been able to dominate and crush the competition by running 278mph in the mile to their 264/mile, 269/1.5mile

The streetbike we built ended up being so fast we began to hear some frivolous talk of maybe it wasn't a street bike.  So Larry and I decided the best way to show these people, would be to build a Altered class (APS) "RaceBike"(show them the differance).  Using the same exact rules others were able to follow we built a APS bike, this bike on its first full pass eclipsed the 300 mark and achieved 311mph in 1.5 miles beating the next fastest 1.5mile APS bike(269mph) by 42mph.

The largest giant is also a quite giant, never patting himself on the back on the internet or any other media.  He does what he does for self gratification and nothing more.  The most boastful thing I think he has ever written is "we don't need no stinking turbo" in regards to the fact his all motor bike having a record over 250mph and being only a mph or 2 from the fastest turbo record with that organization.

Larry Forstall is my GIANT, friend, coach, and hero

To Entropy...
As to the "little yellow butterflies"......could this be in reference to " Charlie Anstaett" butterflies "This BIG" at Maxton, (record run),with the "GREAT" Dave Owens? RIP.

A very nice compliment for Larry Forstall,
and for your part of the team.

It is interesting that, while condemning others for saying too much
about themselves "on the internet," here, in one post, you have
used up more space than "the other" in this same thread, all with
a discussion about YOU.

You used the word "I" 6 times in the first two paragraphs alone.
Add in all the times you use the word “me,” and the post seems
to be all about you, and your struggles to become the top dog.

Is that self serving ?

Is that "patting yourself on the back ?"

Perhaps in a more lengthy article, you could have mentioned
Walt Kudron, who "arranged” for you to received THOUSANDS
of dollars in cash and sponsorships from the giants of the motorcycle industry.

The “team” you so desperately needed to beat accepted
generous sponsorship only from Dave Conforti at World Wide Bearings.

That team paid their own way to the track.
They paid others to build their engines.
They paid others to build turbo systems.
They bought their own parts at retail.
They bought their own tires at retail

No sponsorship other than Dave's bearings.

That team survived on their own money, their own skills, and their own dedication.

They didn't ask for "free" help.

Maybe you should have mentioned Steve Knecum, who built your engines.

Maybe you should have mentioned Richard Pepler, who built your special turbo systems.

Maybe you should have mentioned BROCK’S, who were so generous with wheels and other sponsorship.

Maybe you should have mentioned CONTINENTAL tires,
that supplied you with “special” tires,
and paid you to use your image in national magazines.

Bill: you make it sound like you are the “little guy,”
going up against the “Big guys.”

Well, America likes the underdog every time.

You ain’t the underdog any more !
Now you know what we are used to seeing from you.

You're welcome scott.

If the topic of the post eluded you, it was about how Larry helped ME and his role in MY accomplishments and how I am greatfull to know him.  Isn't that the reason you gave for posting some of your stuff, for Larry. This is a brief on how he has been involved with my racing.  Was hopping it would incurage others to post how this quite giant stood behind them and pushed them faster then they have ever gone.(but instead I get this from you)

I understand you and your team did your best, hopefully you'll recover and come back to pavement racing and do the best of someone better.

Bill

Tom,

I hope you aren't saying that if somebody owns a bike and has somebody build the engine and then someone else rides it that it doesn't mean anything.  You aren't saying that, are you?

If you are then I have a dog in this hunt.  I started LSR at the tender age of 57.  I got serious at the age of 60 and had Steve build me an engine because I can't learn everything he knows in the 20 or so years I may have left.  When I can no longer ride I hope I can find someone who will enjoy riding my bikes as much as I do.  Simple as that!

Tom, you have a lot to be proud of.  261 is definitely saying something and to do it all yourself.  Well good for you.  But, please don't criticize those of us that don't have the knowledge to build a winning engine or who can no longer ride.

Mike

Yeah, I'm with Mike on this.

Tom:  be proud of what you have accomplished.

After all, you are ranked in the Top Ten Fastest Riders in the history
of the World, and you come out swinging for some
almost-70 years-old guy that is ranked WAY below you.

I, of course, didn't HAVE to list you.

Out of respect for what you have accomplished, I did list you.

Maybe, when you are Larry's age, or maybe Karl's age, maybe my age,
you will not choose to ride anymore, but still feel like
you have something to "give Back" to the sport
that has given so much to you.....

And you will help others......
no worries scotto

I consider you a friend, and as a friend, IMO you are off base with your comments on Bill.(below)

I read Bill's post about Larry to be just that:
i.e. Bill's account of his relationship with Larry and how it came about.

As such, I found it focused,  informative, interesting to read.

IMO Bill had no need to give an encyclopedic accounting of his sponsors, friends who helped, etc.

It seems you, Scott, have a sensitive area here which is lost on the common guy like me.

Scott,
you post some exceedingly informative stuff, i love learning that stuff.

However, you have hot buttons i don't understand.

You are not alone in having hot buttons, Tom has em, Bill has em, I have em, we all have em.
We are passionate people or we wouldn't do this crazy sport
But we all gotta keep the hot buttons somewhat in check, yes?

Please don't "refrain from posting", we'd be the worse for it.

Well yes, Karl, I do have hot buttons,
and I have to learn to keep them in check,
certainly for my own good, and for the reading
pleasure of the other Forum readers.
