1397 and 1441 Cam Combos, Reliabilty, Issues - Gen1
« on: November 06, 2012, 08:04:10 AM »
Hi Folks,

I am getting redy to build a 1397 or 1441 Gen1 as a multipurpose bike (LSR, Street, Tour).  My goal is to bust 200mph in the mile, but still be able to ride the bike on the street and occaisionally use it for a 500mile road trip.  I would like to hear about big bore and stroker reliability and the best cam combos for the type of riding that I want to do.  Also, any issues that I should look out for, such as overheating, etc.  I prefer all motor over a turbo, as my bike has 40K on it and I am going to freshen up the motor and can't afford to do that AND install a turbo.

What is you displacement?
What is your cam combo?
What type of riding do you do?
How many miles since your build?

Thanks

I know Mike at SAE built himself a pretty impressive Gen 1 1441 a while back then sold it.  I don't know all the details but did know it made a very good amount of power on the dyno and I also rode next to it, so know it was not just a dyno queen motor.  It was his head and the 08 crank, that is all I know for fact internally on it.  It was fine for the street, one battery start and maybe two fans if I am not mistaken.  You can probably PM him or call him for ideas.

I have a 1471cc Hayabusa.  I use it everyday ( in the "summer".... and thats only may-september here :( ).
It is a one battery ( a BIG battery ) starter and noe real overheat problems thanks to the  "low" compression ( around 13-1 ).

The Cams are Megacycle 385 and 08 valves and valve springs.
Head ported "local" and a TiForce SUMO.

I have ridden this on 11 trackdays and its still 220RWHP some 5 year after I assembled it.

Total miles ???  10000?   I dont know since I have been using a GEN II gearbox and it doesn't have the same cover over the sprocket so I have been riding without the original speedo. Not that I care since I am never going to sell this bike and I use a GPS to monitor speed :)

The trackdays have put more "mileage" on the bike than the speedo shows anyways :)

I dont know what I am talking about but I do know that I am right :)

Anyone running a 1441 stroker with .415/.395 cam combo on the street?

Okay, so I read the thread on 'high bucket wear' and it sounds like .415/.395 is not for me.  Pardon the noobie questions, but I am getting ready to drop $5large on this build and I want to get it right the first time.

Also, pardon the title of my post.  I know that it is probably getting some attention because of the words 'reliability' and 'issues', but that was not my intent.  I am just trying to get some good advice before I drop my wad on a stroker kit and find out 1000 miles later that my cams are bad.

I know it's probably sickening when a noobie comes in and asks questions that have been beat to death already...sorry about that.

If anyone can help me from making some costly mistakes, I would certainly appreciate it.

Thanks for your time.

55lb might be the number. But if it happens. Don't be surprised. I think 395/385 would be the street combo and maybe the 55 lb springs.  But I think 47 lb shimmed  to about 51 max ...
