hayabusa dies at 140mph every time
« on: May 07, 2013, 04:37:16 PM »
ok so heres what i got its a 2005 busa 1397 i have air shifter and 2 step i have cleaned my air filter, super cleaned fuel injectors and throttle bodies,  changed the spark plugs and changed the oil about 200 miles ago. the kickstand switch was also replaced about 3000 miles ago. bike ran perfect after doing all that but now in the last day or so everytime i hit 140 the bike shuts off and then turns back on. the bike will not let me go faster than 140 it does not do this at any other speed or rpm ive tried to get up to 140 in 5th and 6th gear to check if it was cutting off at a specific rpm but it does not,  just when it hits 140. the speed restrictor or whatever was removed/unplugged years ago when i bought the bike ive buried the needle over 180 several times. anybody have any idea whats causing this my best guess says i need a new fuel pump. but im hoping its not so. if anyone can help please. its so wierd it only dies out at 140 other than that bike runs fine. i woulda thought the fuel pump going bad would cause lag throught speeds and rpms at random

Why was teh sidestand switch replaced?

I'd jumper it out and see if that changes things.
Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

Also try disconnecting (one at a time) the 2-step, the kill box(if seperate) and the power commander if you have one.
I'm not saying your fuel pump is definitely good, but usually fuel issues are gradual and not sudden shut-off. Sudden shut-off is usually electrical.
You need to step by step eliminate things.

Also check very carefully where the kill box wires splice into your coil harness, make sure they're well insulated. I had that problem once.

theres no power commander and i dont use the kill box for air shifter i did try to run without the 2 step i mentioned all those things because thats what ive already ruled out.

yes bike redlines no problem up to 140 mph then it just shuts off regardless the gear

How did it run when you jumpered out the kickstand switch?

Just asking since it seemed that you weren't going to try it because you ruled it out due to it being new.

there really is no correlation between ground speed and normal engine operation. The ecu does calculate theoretical speed based on engine rpm and gear.

The problem you describe, with the bike cutting off and then coming back on seems to be electrical.
The relation to sped but not gear seems to me to be related to vibration or airflow causing something to change at 140mph.

The only think I can figure that woudl be related to an electrical fault that may be related to speed or certain vibration would be either the tip over switch, or the kickstand being vibrated or blown open for some reason at 140mph. could also be the main relay located in the fuse box.

Do the gauges recycle when the bike comes back on?

Check battery voltage under load. Any voltage drop below 12.2 volts will cause this strange anomaly to occur.

We chased a similar problem. Replaced the battery. It cleared the problem up for one pass then it returned. Unplugged the headlight and no more problems. We also had amp problems too but a weak battery can cause the problem you are talking about.

Good point....I checked my logs and I was running 11.3V out the backdoor at the last MIR race  :bah:
