No spark, any ideas
« on: May 23, 2013, 04:16:44 PM »
Gen 1 bike, just redid top end, owner put used harness in as it is a Salt bike. Checked sidestand switch and roll over switch as well as add on kill switch, no luck. No codes showing. Ideas?

It now has an MPS kill box for airshifter, I did not install.

unhook air shifter kill box, checked crank position sensor and also check cam position sensor, check one thing at a time to you figure out problem. :tu:

Is it still using the stock key switch? If it has been removed it is my understanding a resistor needs to be wired in the circut to repace the key switch for it to function properly. Believe there are some old posts concerning that.

Still has stock key switch. Checked and reset cam pin height(thought I had it there!,no luck) swapped cam sensor from running bike, still nothing. I am suspecting the new to bike wiring harness. Tired of chasing my tail!

You sure it wasn't getting spark?  You can leave that unplugged and still get spark just no fuel.  I do it all the time when diagnosing issues.  Actually once the bike starts you can unplug the cam sensor and the bike still runs.

No spark at all. I know on our 750's  and at least on several Busa's here if bike is running you can pull it, but will not start with it unplugged.  And have had about 6 bikes in recent years with running issues that unplugging cam sensor fixed, including my 750 at Bonneville. One was even a Kawasaki---- :hys:

That toggle switch in the cam sensor wire on the 750 ran the fastest that bike has done as a naked bike (things you do when you have to on the salt   )
sure an easy way to diagnose pin or sensor problems

Yes I know it won't start with it unplugged. But that cam sensor controls fuel not spark. So if it doesn't start its because of the fuel signal not spark.  Well as far as I know from past exp diagnosing  starting issues.  You need spark, fuel, compression and timed ignition.

Hey Jim, when it does it again (it probably will since it is a salt bike) check the ECU and connectors for a green pin or 2, then swap the relays for new.  That fixed the spark on the 1000 a time or 2

IIRC cam sensor tells ecu crank is on correct stroke for 1 to fire, if it does not see that signal on start up, no spark on TDC #1 or the rest.
Greg can chime in here.

Jim and i had been talking a bit and i figured cam sensor related as it was similar symptoms to one i had here that the cam pin came out while in use after it was brought to me to diagnose rough running

everything checks out like it should run and even fuel down the throttlebodies gets no result  , no fault code, good fuel pressure
the clincher is no tach response either in editor or on the bike ,
the ecu does not know the motor is turning untill it sees a cam signal  , probably only needs one pulse from it

if it had a pc3 you would think it was at fault as there crank sensor pickup gives similar symptoms too
