Talked to Stoney a bit last night. He said salt was wet and slushy in places. Have not seen any fast bike speeds as yet. He got good licensing pass in the hit a bump and bent some parts. Hoped to fix today.

My bike is working well I fixed all the things I had issues with.

But pulling past 180 I have a slight wobble (7mphENE) wind I loosened the steering nut 1/4 turn to see if this was the issue. It wasn't so bad that I couldn't keep going but I was taking my time as I am still doing my A license run I got  190mph in the 3rd then had a bad spin out and shot sideways but got out of it. I lost all speed to get over 200. Still slippery  for me.

My bike is still showing 10.5 A/F ration so I leaned it out a bit more as well for tomorrow and I will try to drive as close to the edge as  I can to avoid the squirrel trails that go though the center of the tracks at angles?

This may not be the year.
Maybe this year?

So , been hard at work getting Larry's old Busa ready for the salt.Desalted and uncorroded a bunch of things as bike had sat for awhile. Longer swingarm, filled with lead, set back and lowered footpegs, re-worked exhaust and airshifter to fit after, fitted DL-32 data logger, and scrapped Power Commander and re-tuned with ECU-Editor---- 258.5 at rear wheel! Took it for short spin, what a beast!

Track #2 Wens and Thrus very good.

Got the wobbles out thanks to Karl and Kent. :)

Had 02 sensor issues and messed up my Micro tech lost too much power going rich on Wens 186 for 2 miles

Today Put map back to dyno and had lots of power

Did a Salt burnout sort of and hit 194 in the 1/4 saw GPS 196 then a big gust of wind turned me over on my side too much and pulled out and off.

Too much work to allow me to attend any other salt events this year but there's always next year

Race save everyone

Maybe this year?

Too bad you couldn't finish that run clean
when that wind gets you all you can safely do is go with it , there is always next meet or next yr
not staying for a run tomorrow morn ? usually the lines are short and you can get a couple in , even back up a fast pass if you qualify

No didn't stay, it was a team decision and I didn't want the feeling of this is my last chance to get it done on the salt.

I really don't need to take chances, there will be other chances other years. I have a wife and family to go home to.

We got a video off Scott's double and it shows how bad the gust were as the horizon went from flat to 30 degs.

Kind of showed us how limiting these APS bodies are and when you can run them.

30 deg  is lucky to be upright

6 mph cross wind is my current max on the busa , and i have a bigger tail to try , be more like 3 after that

in 2011 we had 2 750's at the start line  a naked and a faired   14 mph side wind and no one was running , all waiting for the wind to drop,
after a couple of hours thought bugger it have to go back to the pits  anyway may as well use the track , i went first and about the 1 3/4 mile and somewhere 180mph the wind was leaning me enough i just let it drift me off the course and rode back to the pits
Kim on the naked bike followed , 207mph , slight lean but said it felt good the whole way , qualified her for a record and hat
APS is a 2 edged sword

i have mad respect for those doing amazing things on the paved tracks...getting
up to speed in such a relatively short distance...then shutting down right away and
trying to get stopped....

at bonneville alot more distance....but for those pursuing world land speed records...its
one of the very few places to do it.....for the required world record timing trap of a mile or
a kilo....

= coefficient of friction that is about half ) 0.6) or less than that of pavement....and a surface
that changes...alot......a very special challenge to maintain the traction...handling and power after up
to speed( around 2 miles or so)...basically another race beginning once up to speed for another 1-3 miles....

in addition to Ralph Hudson hitting a soft spot and loosing the front end at the 1-3/4 mile mark and crashing....
and at least 40 4 wheel vehicle spins, some at speeds as high as 315 mph...many complete losses....like Johnny
Hotnuts a member here...(the pic of what left is unreal) and also fellow member "Stainless" vehicle on video rolled
at least 16 times at over 250 mph...

also Stoney Fritz crashed this am ,at Bonneville hit a rut before the 3 mile mark.....at SLC University Hosp...7 broken ribs, spleen
at jeapardy, pneumothorax left side, broken scapula, still not cleared by trauma team...

I may be off on the actual Degs but it was more then enough and I had the same issue in Texas my last run in 06 and as speed increased so did the tilt.

Not a good feeling and that's what it felt like to me again.

And Oz you are right APS is a 2 edge sword and I think 3mph is my max for sure now as well.

I did see one of Scott G.'s guys on a APS-BF2000 Start his record run in a strong wind and went 220mph, that was really impressive.

I think next B-Ville I will have a 2nd bike in the naked class to up my actual seat time.

Thanks Joe i was wondering how he was doing,  Mate of Jims
The video Stoney posted of an earlier run looked nasty once the bike was unsettled

Carl If its not just the wind , look for a lack of symmetry  between sides  or fairing to wheel
we fixed a problem with the 750 with just 2 well placed 5mm thick spacers on diagonally opposite fairing mounts and a couple of pieces of zig zag cut duct tape , went from a 175mph scary ride to a mid 220s on rails

Faster you go the more any imperfections show , ask Fred about lack of symmetry

Yes I understand that maybe I'll feel rich one day and go for some wind tunnel work. maybe share a day with someone?

I had no issues with pulling to one side with less wind though.

The main fix for my wobble was to lower the front end.

Johnny H-nuts Spun again?
I believe he did it a few years ago as well.
Damn, hope he is ok.

Edit:
Just saw the picture of his car...damn. Seems he is doing ok, just your "normal bumps and bruises" from rolling a car on the salt...

OZ further thinking on my lean.

I was hugging the right side and wind was coming from the left.

I'm sure I must have tried to steer away causing the bike to tilt.

This was probity the issue in Texas as well.

last year I was up to 208 mph in speed with just the wobble to deal with and no leaning.
Maybe this year?

If you have a reasonable side surface area and a crosswind your going to get lean, think of a sailboat  with a quartering wind
needs lots of guys hanging out the side or it just falls over

Best example of tenacity i have seen in a cross wind was Howard , at Bubs a few yrs ago chunking offcentre the front tire , in a pretty steady side wind , when you think about it a little its both scary and amazing , and probably came down to     it did not feel great but still within his comfort level as it was consistant
but the reality was a counter steer and slip angle that was pulling at the tire enough to distress the carcase and loose some rubber on the loaded area

Not advisable to put a side load on the tires at Bonneville with all the ruts and grooves in the salt. Very uncomfortable to ride in a crosswind there.

No for sure better to let off pull over and write post the next day for sure.

One thing I say is I have a family to support and I have to get back to work unharmed.

Push it when conditions allow.

And at Bonneville conditions change by the day or even the run.

Waiting in line see the wind get stronger and stronger is one of the hardest things to watch.

Also me and 110 degs heat do not get along so well.

Race safe everyone...
