Apparently, 87 octane burns faster.  There have been several posts on this subject and 87 seems to be the consensus.  I know that my bike (stock) seems to run alot better on 87.

I used to ALWAYS put 92+ in the Busa, thinking that the higher octane was better.  Come to find out... it ain't necessarly so.

Here we go again.  Is your bike stock?  Check your manual...Regular is fine.  If your bike is pinging try stepping up...but it usually doesn't happen unless your running hard in hot weather.  Save your $ bro.

Want to make up your own mind? Read this:

http://www.factorypro.com/tech/fuel_octane_vs_power.html

http://www.factorypro.com/tech/octane_measurement.html

Run the lowest octane that does not ping. Anything over that is wasted.

C16 for the turbocharged bikes on big boost and 87 octane for the stock bikes works best.
Bikeless at the moment, but I am only going to be able to hold out for so long!

When riding 2 up in the summer, I noticed that my Busa would PING during takeoff when I used 92 octane.  I switched to 87 and it went away....ran much stronger.

I can vouch for 87.  I used 93 and the bike picked up a hesitation, I used 89 also but the bike was not as crisp as 87.  I have a stock motor with a full race hindle, stock chip re-mapped and full BMC race filter.

This was covered before.  You need to be careful of the state and how they mix oxyigenated fuels.  89 for stock is the best -stock-  87 will run fine in most states.

That is a good point. A bad tank of gas is a bad tank of gas and shouldn't be confused with an octane issue. Look carefully at the pump to see what you are putting in. If it is the right octane and it doesn't run well, don't go back. I have encountered water in gas before. Who knows what else was in there.

That's strange.  I'd suspect that you got some bad 92 somewhere.

I'm sure some of you remember my inputs on this subject, and the emails that I had with Chevron Tech Department on the issue of 87 vs 92 octane.  No archives to reference, since that was before the board was toasted.

Chevron said all of their pump octanes burn at the same rate, and that there is no extra power (no extra heat release per volume) in 92 vs. 87 octane.

They will all produced the same amount of power if there is no knocking.  Once the engine knocks (pre-ignition of the fuel), then power is lost.

Manual says 87. Too high of octane = carbon build-up.  Compression ratio determines octane.

87 is all that is needed, but premium fuel burns ALOT cleaner. We have done several tests on this. I think its worth it on these bikes to run premium.
