busa vs cbr929 roll on
« on: September 17, 2013, 03:43:07 PM »
hello folks, I had a ride out today with my son on his Honda cbr929 fireblade...it has an akrapovic end can and power commander...he is about 154lbs and I am around 196 lbs, we decided to have a roll on in 3rd gear from around 45mph (I have a 2007 gen 1 busa totally stock apart from a smart TRE)....I was shocked to see him match me side by side as I expected to leave him easily.....was I expecting too much?......are our busa's better in the upper gears for roll ons?.....I am disappointed, I  thought my busa could whup his ass whatever gear we were in????

Its all about the power to weight ratio if gearing is similar.  If he has lower gears he might have pulled you or kept up at least.  A lighter bike with a lighter rider with similar HP wins!  A third gear roll on starting at just 45 is lugging the motor and bad for a Busa, starting in second you might have pulled away.  Your RWHP is probably in the high 150s and add the extra weight of the Busa and yourself...well, you saw what happened.

A 929 is geared shorter than a Busa.   You can exceed the 929's top speed in 4th gear.   You should have been in 1st gear or 2nd if you are scared of the bike.

Come on now, I think he asked a legit question.   And starting a roll on in first at 45 would be an instant wheelie and rev limitter hit.  If he could hold on and shift, a sustained wheelie would occur.  30 mph in first or 45+ in second is good for a roll on and not at all harmful to the bike.  Having ridden with my son I can also understand what other factors might have contributed to his run.

First goes to approx. 80 mph.   Roll ons under 60 mph I start in first.   Throttle control!
I can't imagine trying to roll on from 45 mph in third!   These bikes are meant to turn far more than Harley RPM.

Agreed with above posts.   Wrong gear.    2nd, or even 1st.
My bike saw great speed gains just from gears and adjustable lowering links.   (About $150 parts, maybe $100 or less labor).   You could control and put down the power that way.
Not surprised at all he kept up with you in third...     The CBR 9xx.s are not schmucks....

I use to do those races back in 2000 with my R1 before I bought a BUSA.  The R1 then couldn't compete up top so I'd say lets roll on at 60mph in 6th and I would walk away.  They would eventually pass but I'd jump out quick for a while and hold it.  It's all about gearing, power, weight, etc... :thumb:

I used to own a 929, the Busa is way faster. You should have been in 2nd in a roll at 45 mph.

The 9XX cc hondas were some great bikes.   I still miss my '03 954,  not as fast as the Busa is but the "fun" factor was wayyy higher.  I don't think it was capable of staying on two wheels for more than a few minutes.

JMHO, but stock busa gearing is to high. Add 2 teeth onto the rear sprocket and wake her up!
