Bill Warner's 296mph mile record.
« on: January 06, 2014, 04:00:27 PM »
Here is Bill's fastest mile record certificate from Loring last year. I am posting this for Larry Forstall, who is having computer issues.

I think this record and his 311 will stand for a long time. Miss you Bill, Godspeed.

Dean

Thanks Dean. Bill's 311 will be remembered forever. However the 296 is likely to stand longer. Look at it this way; the 296 is 95% as Fast in only 66% of the distance. The rate of acceleration while not up to Larry McBride standards was still exceptional. And Bill had no nitro, no 13" slick or wheely bar. The small select group of 260+ MPH Pavement racers (There are no 270's) are the only ones who have some idea of what it took. I wonder what the speed would have been for 1.5 miles? Knowing Bill he would not have even changed the gearing. 320 at 13.3 RPM ? Another Bill may appear someday but it will take some time. We admire him for his racing records, we miss him for his smile and easy going nature. He was a big fish in a small pond (LSR) and he would hate me saying that. Miss you !!  LSL

And some 280's. What I meant was no one else has been above 270 ( except Joe Amo's 272 at Bonneville). The FIRST over 270.   LSL
