how to weld sensor bung on titanium exhaust?
« on: June 13, 2014, 10:43:43 AM »
Hi,

Need to weld a bung on a titanium exhaust for a temp sensor.   Not sure what to do.  All the welders that I have talked to are saying they can't do it.  Just to drill the hole I guess is a problem.   I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Jack

Oh my, I went down that rodeo recently.   It takes a special setup to weld Ti.  Then when you can find someone to do it, you can't find the fittings. Other than Ti O2 bungs, you must get anything else custom made because you have to weld Ti to Ti, can't use Stainless Steel.

It really doesn't take any special equipment to weld titanium other than a piece of titanium filler rod. Same setup on a tig to weld stainless. Most shops don't want to deal with it, especially on the extremely thin material typically on header tubes, if it is an aftermarket system.

Possibly because most shops cant justify spend ridiculous money on Ti tig wire;its more than $80lb last time I bought some and all the welding supply houses I tried wouldn't sell smaller quantities. It also has to be purged on the inside or the weld will be brittle and crack. Basically its a pain in the ass,but straightforward....

We used a homebuilt cabinet to do Ti stuff, had it setup like a sandblast cabinet, filled cab with argon, and had at it, it was about 3ft square, maybe a little bigger, easily got a bike pipe in it, kind of like anything else, must be clean and weld area purged of air
The older you get do you notice you start chickening out way before the bike does

Hey Thanks for the Replys!

This is what i've done so far:

1. Tried to find a 1/8th Titanium Compression Bung.  Pretty much non existent?  Which is strange, because you would think this not a uncommon request for bikes or tuner cars.

2.  Tried to find Welder.  They thank me kindly, then say they can't do it.  I've even tried specialty machine shops.

So now specifically what are my options?

Can I in any way use the Stainless Steel bung that came with the sensor?

How do I go about finding some one with the equipment to weld this?

Or is this a No Go?

Thanks,

Jack

Gsxr-boy750 welded mine and did a great job.  My EGT bungs were custom made by a friend of a friend from bar Ti.

Will that work for you?   If it is a straight section of pipe, may be a solution.

This may sound strange, but I used the bung as a nut.Slipped the O2 sensor through the hole in the pipe and put the bung inside and tightened it up.

This is a EGT Sensor that uses a 1/8 NPT compression fitting for the bung.  I don't know if it will work with that.

Thanks,
Jack

I looked high and low, could not find any Ti 1/8" NPTs "on the shelf".

Just for information these guys will do the welding at a reasonable price.
They do some of the finest heli-arc work that I have seen  :thumb:.
