Speed Week 2014 - 100 years of Bonneville racing
« on: August 04, 2014, 09:08:06 AM »
I'm headed West tomorrow for my first Speed Week. I'll be running in naked in Altered - Gas 1650, against a record of 194.4, by Dean Veale in 2009, who was also on a Busa.

I know Osti and 9secJen will be headed out soon, running naked in Modified - Gas 1650, shooting for 201 (and a red hat for Jen) on Jack Broomall & Larry Forstall's 200.9 record.

Entropy and partner Don will be there for the debut of their new lakester, and I'll be pitted with them. Come by and say hello, look for the Texas flag.

Who else is going? Should be lots of fast 2 & 4 wheeled streamliners, billed as the biggest Speed Week ever.

Here's wishing you and the whole gang a safe, fast & enjoyable week!

Sure would like to be going, made it as far a Colorado last year on a bike trip but the weather changed my plans. My brother is on a bike trip right now and is planning on stopping by for a day.......I'll tell him to look you hooligans up!

Best of luck and enjoy your trip Dean,
Dan

The SCTA has delayed the meet one day to let the salt dry out. Hopefully one day is all it will take, the weather looks encouraging over the next week. I will get to Wendover today and report back. Dean

Posted by the SCTA:

Bonneville Salt Report, August 7, 8:30pm: after a complete review of the Bonneville Salt Flats, it appears that the courses are drying and we expect continued improvement. The Board has decided to start site cleanup on Saturday, August 9th, allowing all participants onto the salt for pit selection and inspection on Sunday. We hope to start racing on Monday, August 11th based upon course conditions. The SCTA merchandize trailer will be open on the entry road for all SCTA products. The Board thanks all racers and fans for their continued support and patience during this delay. We will have another update tomorrow morning to provide current conditions but for now, Speed Week and the Century of Speed celebration is still on!

Speedweek 2014 was just cancelled. It rained again yesterday. They may extend World Finals, October meet, and make it a belated SW. My sympathy To Dean, Ryan and Jen, Karl and his crew, and anyone else who made the long trek out there for nothing. Bummer.

Sorry to hear that for all involved.  Same happened to me in 1994.  Had meticulously built a bike for over a year and we had everything loaded and ready to go for the 2,700 miles trek to the Salt Flats from NH when my racing partner’s wife walks out of the house.  She tells us that the Race Director had just called and told her the event was cancelled.  We would have been on our way if the call had been made two minutes later.  This was before cellphones, so we would not have found out until our first stop, which was Chicago, 1,000 miles away.

Not for me, Speed Week was the best logistically this season. I hope the salt clears up and folks go fast at the bike meet, WOS, Cook's, and WF.
