Author Topic: can a cam chain tens. be replaced without cam gear jumping teeth on the chain???  (Read 4040 times)

i figured manual chain tens. get put in in place of oem tens., so it wouldn't be an issue. I just want to be sure nothing in the engine would get effected

Yes. If you only remove the tensioner and replace it with the manual one, you will be Ok.

Before you remove the tensioner, roll the motor over to TDC on the No.1 cylinder, this will make sure the chain is taut at the front and loose on the rear... You can remove the tensioner easily at this point without it jumping any teeth... Put the new one in, but be warned, do not over tighten the cam chain with the manual tensioner....

Why did you want to replace the tensioner in the first place, is the cam chain making a noise ?

Stock tensioner on these bikes is pretty good-- unlike earlier non hydraulic ones like my SRAD 750-- but you want to be sure, remover valve cover and zip tie gear to chain.
