What gives with tire rules?
« on: March 10, 2015, 07:16:05 PM »
Looks like race tires are required if you go over 200, at least it reads that way in the rule book. Is this true? I assumed that most road tires made for bikes like ours would have speed rated tires sufficient for short blasts at 220+.

Nope, unless you get race slicks all you can get for the road is a 'Y' or (Y) designated speed rating which is good for 186 mph or 300 kph.  No 220 mph street tires that I know of.

The AMA also has some info.  Are you looking for NHRA or Bonneville LSR tire types?

Thank for the reply. I'm just not sure if I need to get race spec tires to go over 200. I don't want to get kicked off the course if I do. I'd rather just have race tires mounted. Do you know where to get race tires?

They're available but even these race spec slicks are just 'Y' speed rated.  Ask NHRA what they'll permit.

Thanks for the help. I've been doing some searching and it looks as though there are no tires rated for that speed. I also read something about a 50 mile per hour allowance at the track. I'll need to dig a little deeper.

For what it's worth I've heard from a number of educated sources that the speed ratings given are for what's termed to be "sustained" speeds, whatever the rating.  So, if recognized as such by racing sanctioning bodies, NHRA and the like, a tire rated for sustained speeds of 186 mph could reasonably be given a 50 mph (allowance).

You guys are great.  :D  I should have asked this earlier,  front tire as well, or will a 2ct suffice. Thanks again.

BMST is not as strict on tires, they figure its your ass and your choice, i would still get the 003's
2015 regs are on the AMA web site

2. S. TIRES
The rider has the sole responsibility of ensuring tires are rated for
the appropriate speed and for inspecting the condition of tires
before and after each run.
As a result of the rapid evolution of technology and the increased
speed that is brings, it is recommended that when choosing tires for
the meet, the rider choose a set that is rated for speeds higher than
the class record. Due to the changing technology of tires it is also
recommended that if the rider has any questions he/she should
contact the tire manufacture to ensure that they are using a tire that
meet the speed requirement needed.

Just FYI, Both Busa and ZX14 OEM tires are NOT Race Rated.  At Wilmington, we have Tire Waivers that you have to sign for going over 200.
