Gearing
« on: July 15, 2015, 07:06:47 PM »
Who knows the THEORETICAL top end of a stock 18/43 combination vs. a 19/43?  11,700 redline.

Thanks in advance,

Davey

My Bonneville calculator says with no slip and a 25 inch tall tire... that includes growth is 218.8 and 231
YMMV

A little bit of tire difference makes a lot of speed difference.  Do a roll out, give me the number and I can tell you the number with/without growth.  I think we determined the tire grew about 1/2 inch at 200.
I came up with the same numbers as 2001 without growth... roll out 76.9

It's under GSX(took me a minute to find it too).

On my spreadsheet, which I know to be 99%accurate, 18/43 is 208 and 19/43 is 219. Is your bike going to pull 11,700 in 6th gear? I doubt it. When I am picking my gearing I use the rpm where it makes the most horse power. It in not going to pull much over peak hp in 6th gear.

Hey Fred, what does your spreadsheet say for the following sprockets at 11,200?

19/38
19/37
19/36

Thanks.

Not Fred (added... you beat me to it Fred  8) ), but I get Fred's numbers if I use a 74.64 inch roll out with no growth and no slip...

11200
36- 250.9
37 - 244.1
38 - 237.7

Again, YMMV... tire size, growth, traction.... theory is always subject to a lot of undefined variables but you are in the ballpark

I got my spreadsheet from Karl Gunter(Entropy). Karl had tweaked the tire circumference to get his data loging to match speed and rpm and come up witha very accurate gearing spreadsheet. Thanks Karl it has se3rved me well. :D

Sounds like for street stuff I best leave the gearing stock.  A 210 RWHP bike on the street does not need gearing for 219, that is just way too tall.

Would a 19 be better than an 18 for the dragstrip (1/4 mile) with a 6" over arm?...........if so, we will do that and then go back to the 18 for my street stuff.

A 17 would probanly be better for the dragstrip.

What I hear you saying is that you see the bike crossing the line in 5th and a 19 would allow it to cross in 4th.  Launch would be a bit more challenging with a 17..............do not wanna smoke the tire in any part of second............time lost, IMO.

You should really try 18/40. Not just try just run it.

You should just try it stock before you start making changes. Going 1 down or 1 up is a massive change for the 1/4mi. Thats 2.5t on the rear in eaither direction. FWIW,I use 18/42 and go thru the traps at the top of 4th gear on my SWB Gen2. Find gearing that works for your weight/riding style.

If you do a proper burn out, you will not smoke the tire. You will be fighting wheelies...

If you want the best 1/4 mile time out of your bike, gear it lower than stock. Stock is too TALL.

Got the "infinately/threaded" lowering links and front end will, of course, be strapped.  Also will have Terry's 2-6 inch arm set at 6" plus Brock's Drag Shock

set for Rodney's suited weight.  (Also came with a bigger spring for my butt).
