How are you guys attaching weights.
« on: July 26, 2015, 02:21:34 AM »
I've seen swingarm weight plates on some of the bikes.  How's it done? Thanks in advance.

Weight plates are generally bolted on...required by the rules... Caution, be careful... saw a bike last year with huge weights bolted to the swingarm... unfortunately went down... rider spent a little time in University Hospital.  Do not add too much weight at a time... I always put weight on the front as well, and in the middle if you can find a spot... stay balanced

Hey, how fast can a guy go without weights?

John, that is an unanswerable question...
It depends on the condition of the salt...
It depends on the direction of the wind....
It depends on the riders right wrist...
It depends on the weight of the rider....
It depends on the riders body position....
and so on and so on...

With that said during the Bub (now the BMST) I have noted that most guys on street Busa's, without weights hit the 170s-190s.  I watched a turbo guy run mid 190s, repeatedly... I could hear the wheel spin.... every run... HP without traction is the usual problem.
Back in 03 when we set the 1000 production record we were using my son's street bike with my race motor stuffed in it.  Speed stalled at about 177 no ballast, added an invisible 40 pounds and the calculated slip dropped to 8% from 15% and the bike picked up 5 MPH... enough for the record.  That was the last time we ran the street bike... of course the kid wanted me to leave the motor in it instead of changing it back out... :hys:
Next year used a dedicated race bike, with filled swingarm and weight under the front fairing.

I'm no expert, but it would seem the COG is too high, may cause handling issues, etc.

Ah hah! Large diameter threaded rod through the hollow axle with bolted weights (the kind you put on weight bars). Bolts and large washers on each side of the weights.

This is a mates bike, it ran 216-224 on low boost (stock internal motor), low weights did not handle as well as my busa pictured below in 257mph trim
Neill had swingarm full 30kgand 2 ingots 48kg (171 lb total)
mine has swingarm full, 30kg, 2 ingots mounted high , 50kg, weight box in front of tire 66 kg (321 lb)

Wow, those are like pics of art.
The weights down low and handling variable makes me think that weight up in the passenger area might be a good thing.

All ballast is required to be bolted in place... no hose clamps  Our hidden 40 was in the trunk... didn't have the bolted rule back then.
Since then I have always bolted weight in the tail... and the nose... and the middle

I think the rules require that the weight be attached ahead of the rear axle....
U bolts will work if you want temporary weight.  A weighted swingarm for racing and another for the street is an option b... lots of stock arms around.

neglected the how its bolted part
Neills has brackets like the lower part of my arm to bolt to
mine has the section between brace and arm filled in and bolting to that
weight box is bolted into top of arm box  and side bolted on lower  bracket

Dont look too close at my welds though function not form is all i aim for

Not everybody can have the special Black Art racing weights such as you Greg!!
Have a Harley, spent lots of money on it, thought I had a fast motorcycle, bought a Busa, realized all I had was a fast Harley, not a fast motorcycle!

When you guys add that kind of weight, what shock/spring changes do you make?  Must be a BIG change adding another 40-80lbs+ on the bike in certain parts.  I'd think it would really upset the geometry of factory suspension depending where it's added.  Do most re-spring and adjust factory or are a lot using the high end shock setups?

Kim and i have entered and Jim will be secondary rider on both for Sat and Sunday
I see a couple of familiar names from your group

Mike yep the BHP Brokenhill ingots are pretty rare at Bonneville
weight box had some changes since that pic  it took all day and a bottle of gas to melt 5 buckets of wheel weights into that weight box, shot is only 60% weight by volume of solid
its now a 110kg weight and were loosing the side weights  to get better centralisation

we upped the spring rate and replaced the link with steel otherwise a std shock  , i roughly call it semi sprung as a lot of the weight  is acting directly on the tire
not much different to a street bike with luggage and passenger
quite different to those that mount it off the chasis or subframe like Richard Assen did when he ran 262mph in 2011
