COLORADO MILE
« on: August 27, 2015, 11:38:00 AM »
Here we go, the first ever Colorado Mile. Who is going? Use this to post speeds and comments. It will be interesting to see how my NA bike runs at that altitude.

Interesting is one way to put it... SLOW is another way

Why would you go to Colorado, when Loring is the same weekend? With tons more shutdown? And cooler temps? And sea-level air?

I'm just busting your balls Fred, I'm sure it's an easier drive from Texas, but I was hoping you'd be in Maine so I could buy you a beer, and see your badass bike. Good luck up there.

I was planning on Loring but the very long drive is hard on my OLD butt. Also it will be cool to go to the inaugerel(sp) meet. Everything you say about Loring is right, plus great people there. I hope to make all the meets at Loring next year. I was looking forward to having a beer and seeing your fast ass bike. Still have my fingers crossed on WOS.

Well you will be 1000 miles closer to Bonneville in Denver than Texas and 2100 miles closer than if you went to Maine.
See you there Fred.... Depends on what they say on the first if I bring the bike.

Fred you decided to go, cool. I'll see you there.
Should be interesting with the attitude on us N/A guys.
I haven't found where the D/A is listed for Watkins, anybody have an idea what it is?

Front Range Airport elevation 5512
Density Altitude is the altitude relative to the standard atmosphere conditions (ISA).... altitude, air temp, altimeter setting and relative humidity.

So DA can vary considerably there, just like Bonneville.
Luckily it is an airport and all that info as well as DA should be readily available.

Guessing it will be around 8000-8500 looking at the weather forecast and assuming 20% humidity.  Those are mid-day estimates, early should be better of course.

Also, the number for the automated weather station is: (303) 261–9104

Anyone know if the track will be set up to run to the North?  Or to the South?  Might get a little tail wind help early Sat and Sun if it's run to the North.

Hi all I'll be there with my two bikes.

I had to take an extra week off work to make it and it it only a 15 hour drive for me while Texas and Wilmington are both just over 30.

Loring would be closer to 50 hours.

Depending on Bonneville this may be the only event that I will go to as my butt doesn't like the longer drives neither lol

I'll be leaving tomorrow as I like a day of rest before I scare the crap out of myself :)
Maybe this year?

I'm sure some of you have heard by now that Fred Vance went down in Colorado today. He wanted me to let everyone know he's doing ok and is in good spirits. He is going to be kept overnight for observation but released in the morning. He has a broken collar bone, some minor road rash, and lots of bumps and bruises but no life threatening injuries. Fred himself told me to go ahead and post this so everyone knew he was ok.

I'll post more info if I get it.

Seems yesterday day a lot  of guys missed the mile marker or did not know how crucial the shut down is with it only being 1/2 mile. Some over braked cousing the front to skid.

I managed so far 202, 208, 205 on my 750 it not liking more than 20 lbs boost. It may be out on the map as I only dynoed it to 18lbs and I have no dataloger on it to know which way its out. Also I tuned it With VP inport and the closest I could get here was C-16.

My 1000 is working well and with 2 runs and 185 in the 1/2 mile both times I've had to shut it down just after as the cross wind made it get off track.

I think the fastest at this point could be in the 211 range for a bike here
Maybe this year?

I sould add that this is a great track equal to the Goliad track. If the wind changes or slows down we should see some fast speeds. No issues with shut down if you prepare for it. There is also a safe run off area where you could go a ways and still be safe.
Maybe this year?

Fred it was good to hear your were mostly ok after we initially heard 2 guys had gone down and you were one of them
Sorry to misscatching up
Gixxerfixxer  i wanted to say hi too but never seemed to cross paths , good numbers from the 750

The braking area was a little challenging , esp with some white paint in areas, but if you started right at the mile end it was not too bad
Kim went way out the back when she missed the mile marker,( so intent on getting her speed right for licencing), the dirt is very rough
If it could be leveled somewhat without plowing it up and making it loose it would help a lot
We ran still in a lot of salt setup, swingarm full of shot , way tall gearing , weight was a tradeoff , gave great traction, but at a cost both ends
Speeds at 1/4, 1/2 and mile helped dial in the bike, but soon found we were out of power
happy with the 237.7 for my first time on a mile , even more happy with the 206.3  1/2
Kim went 207 and Jim went 215 i will get an exact speed when we get back to Ca

Arnie missed you when we left and i hope our thanks were passed on  :thumb:

I guess I would like to get everyone's 2 cents on the event.  What you liked, what you didn't like and such.  I know that we did a good job but there is room for improvement.  I just want some racers opinions on how we could make it better for you.

Here's a few youtube videos for anyone not on my facebook

https://youtu.be/xYXhNwsrcbM

https://youtu.be/ku9jn7SlGfM

Greg I did a run up the pits in the golf cart looking for you but as it goes with racing I find its hard to find anyone unless your close in the grid.

I had no issues with the stopping as I had been to Goliad a few times and I am always and looking for the 1 mile marker.

Its one thing I like about the US mile courses is that on the right side they are just 4 signs , 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 Mile. to me it makes it easier to know where I always am on the course.

I Left the course at about 10am Sunday to make it home to fly to work only to find out that that I had been released from work. Damn oil field grrrr

I'm now thinking to put my 1000 back to stock bodywork to get more drivability out of it.

It does not like the crosswind one bit and it did a hard push to the right as soon as I neared 200mph on it.

On two runs on it I had to back out of it both times.

Arnie I still think it was a great course and event and yes I will be going again.

Maybe this year?

Ryan, congrats on a well run event... running a vehicle about every minute or so.... the lines went fast.
I was fighting gremlins, they won... but the 30 minutes wait to make a check run made it easy to know that I was not making progress...  :(
If you wanted to run laps, it would have been easy.

My only suggestion would be advertise better, I ran into a lot of folks that did not know the event was happening, even more at the Monday car show that didn't know it had.  One guy at the show (Hellcat) did have a CO mile cert in his display.

Greg, I was really hoping you were going to piss off the GTR guys again on that last pass.

For the Kaw guys, one H2R on stock gears ran the rev limit at the mile 3 times, 205, 207 and 208 if I remember it right.

Ryan,
A couple of things I'd like to see added:
A dumpster for trash.
Better announcement of speeds for the pit crew on the radio.
On Thursday the way the people were released to the pits was kind of "interesting" maybe that can be revisited.
Rear-view mirrors on the golf carts!!!! Of course people would have to use them.
It was a great event and went off well, thank you.

Funny thing about the braking area, it was lit up with all sorts of red and amber lights that i never noticed even once at speed , but the mile markers were very easy to see, big black with yellow numbers panel really stood out against the horizon

Carl those pits were long , hard to find anyone , and if you were not near the person in line they were probably preparing to run
have to say hi next time

Thanks Mike and hope there is nothing more going on in there than what you already know, thanks also for your help :thumb:

Stainless i would have liked to piss them off too, but the miss that held Jim up was with me too and only found the one loose injector wire as the track closed, the -3 at rear regearing and paying attention to my top gear shift (short shifted) may have got me closer ,

It was a really well run event and everyone of the workers we met was very friendly. My and Kims best times were on our licensing passes before the bike started playing up. I was happy with the  215--my fastest mile so far-- and really happy with the 191 half. Both Kim and I ran off, mine was simply thinking I had more room as the run before at 196 was a very easy slow down, only went in about 30 feet at about 30mph and my dirt bike riding took over and just drove it out with no drama, luckily. Better brakes are on the shopping list. My step daughter lives less than an hour away so we had a place to stay and dinner awaiting every night-- nice. Was amazed at all of our saltracing friends that lived in Colorado!

For those that have raced at Colorado and Ohio, what are your thoughts on the surface of the runway?  If you've raced at Colorado, Beeville, and Ohio what are your thoughts?

What was the fastest speed at Colorado? *EDIT* Seems the fastest motorcycle was 237.7mph and fastest car was 246.1mph.

Anyone know what the 2016 race dates are for Colorado?

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and be safe this new year!

2-4 Sept 2016 for Colorado.  From what I saw and heard - there were some concerns about shut down distance -- BUT I also saw a lot of passes on Saturday where people stayed in the throttle WELL PAST the 1 mile marker.

Was hoping for a spring race now that I've got a bike that runs now...fuc&ing fuel pump...

Shut off is short compared to Mojave, but not bad once you get used to it. Greg ran the 237 no problem and my 216 license  pass was no drama. Not sure if you are rolling at 250+

Josh. You should also consider Arkansas in June. 2 mile runway. Lots of shutdown and track record wide open.

Josh, be there or be square! :hys: We, don't know who "we" are right now, will be there with a bike. Don't know which bike, who will be riding. But we will be there. Can't pass on a long track. And we know it will be well run.

Labor day weekend in CO.

Hmm....I'll have to look when the date gets closer.  Probably be tough to make since the kids will be back in school by then.

Looks like a hair shorter than Beeville and Ohio so should be doable... :thumb:

I'd like to put it on the list just hard for vacation during the summer sometimes.  I'd just like to get my bike sorted out at this point and make one clean pass on it turned up.. :D

I'm trying... :D   I guess if mines not ready I could always offer to ride one of yours...  :hys:
