Apparently I'm a poor judge of "glitter" in oil - because the engine is fine!  WHEW. So lucky.

Thankfully I have all winter to freshen it up and reassemble. I will also fab a new water thank that will fit around a shock, and try again next year.

One thing I did notice - the cam chain guide on the top end, over the sprockets had snapped around one bolt. It was still in place and tight, but looked like it fatigued and cracked under stress. Has anyone seen this before?

Dean better to check and be sure than run a motor that could destroy itself and potentially cause you problems too

yep cracked a guide before, went to manual tensioner at that point and not seen it again

Good to know on the guide - and this engine does have an OEM tensioner. It looked to be in the right spot though, hmm.

I was happy to get a chance to look over this beautiful engine, and this turned out to be the best outcome possible. The rods are so light - the crank is so pretty, the pistons, the head... my old friend Kevin used to say - "I wish we could use clear cases so we could see all those pretty parts" and it's true  :tu:  Bob Carpenter

My suggestion is stick with an oem tensioner, thats what Richard and apparently Bob Carpenter swear by
