Blytheville was an old B-52 base just like Loring.  I did not google the runway length but when I hung out there for 8 years in the 70's the runway was 12600 total, 300 wide running N/S at about 250 ft

Official dimensions of runway 18/36 are 11,602 x 150' and elevation is 241'....not sure about the surface or activity lately.  Very curious what the condition of the runway is so maybe it's another option for 250mph+... :thumb:

Hopefully the surface is in good shape for the really fast guys. At 2.2 miles is this course long enough for a 1.5 mile run and sufficient shutdown, leaves about .7 mile to slow down? Would be nice to have a long run closer than Maine.
Just trying to do whats right.
Wanna go fast.

Yes, that could be the concrete dimensions, all B-52 runways were 300 wide total, 150 concrete for the heavy wheels and asphalt for the light wheels... hard to land a plane with 149 ft between the wheels on a 150 ft runway... but it has been done when the plane was light enough.  Should be at least 500 ft of asphalt overrun on each end as well.
Guess we will see if the Texas Guys offer 1.5.

The link in post #1 incorrectly states that the event is taking place at Blytheville Municipal Airport (KHKA) which is 4,999 ft long. The correct location is Arkansas International Airport (KBYH) which use to be Eaker AFB before BRAC shut it down in 1992. As stated, the runway is 11.602 ft long and satellite pictures shows overruns at each end. I looked in my flight publications but there is no current Airport Diagram. The overruns appear to be approximately 500 ft each, eyeballing them. However, they do not appear to be in very good shape.

Fantastic photographs, thanks Wolf.

I still remember the 2 or 3 hours my son and I spent at the USAF hanger at RAf Duxford.
I think Ive got to go again sometime soon. The B-52 is truly VAST !!!

As it happens I just checked and the American Air Museum hanger is reopening in spring 2016 after a refit.
Sorted, thats me going in spring then  :thumb:

Not that it matters but that's not true.  Several B52 bases had 150'-200' wide runways.  Walker AFB, Grand Forks AFB, Carswell Field, Altus AFB, Mather AFB, Bergstrom AFB, Schilling AFB, etc..and a bunch more.  Many SAC bases did have 300' wide runways but not all.  Most were 150'-200'.

i am hoping that the runway is in really good shape. good enough that maybe they will be able to run 11/2 miles in the future. Most of the tracks, Beeville and Loring I know, took a little massaging to make them smoother and safer. The Texas Mile people, Jay, Shannon and Ryan, have always tried to give us the best track possible. :thumb:

I guess I'll wait for a first race report before making any decisions on the Arkansas event, unless it just happens to workout with my schedule that I can get off work.
