Gasket Products
« on: February 28, 2016, 01:15:04 PM »
Can anybody give a fair description of the main types of gasket materials and what chemical products (sealers, positioning, etc.) have worked best in your experience for the different applications?

Both installing and removing gaskets.

MLS steel works well for head gaskets, copper HG on older stuff or OEM. Gasgazinch works good on MLS and copper new and if you were to reuse them but coat both sides and the block or head. Suzuki bond for case halves and valve cover half moons but a light coat.    Cometic will make almost any head gasket in increments of .005 I think, and stroker spacers from .010 - to almost whatever you want in thickness. Cometic also makes engine cover gaskets in 2 different materials, AFM which you can reuse and a basic gasket material but can easily rip, I like the AFM style. Good?

Thanks, A.

You can probably buy it at NAPA, O'Reilly's, etc. also.
Personally I wouldn't coat a new Cometic heat gasket.
Have a Harley, spent lots of money on it, thought I had a fast motorcycle, bought a Busa, realized all I had was a fast Harley, not a fast motorcycle!

Coat  only new copper, but some of you like to reuse MLS  and if you do coat it with only gasgazinch  both sides and block and head.  Period. !! Don't use copper coat... next subject

I have an new OEM gasket kit for this stock overhaul.

I was just wondering when Mr Knecum said "copper HG on older stuff or OEM" if that meant on a new gasket it would improve adhesion and durability/performance.

Just curious, is all.  Thanks !.

A.

PS After reading extensively on Cometic products, I'm going to go out on a limb and make the observation that one would copper coat a metal-layer/based head gasket, whereas one would not do that to a factory head gasket material.
