GUY CAPUTO injured at Wilmington May 2016
« on: May 02, 2016, 08:22:03 AM »
GUY CAPUTO was injured at Wilmington May 2016
while running his turbo Hayabusa with fairing, competing at the
first ECTA LSR meet of 2016 at the Wilmington Ohio track.

Shane Stubbs  reported Guy appeared to be on a good pass
when Guy and the bike went down near the finish line.

Guy was airlifted to hospital

Speeds have not been announced,
and videos of the crash have not been seen.

Update from Rickey Gadson From Dianna (Guy's wife):

Not good news on surgery.

It is worse

He will need c1-6 all fused along with
a plate in5-6 and only 50 percent range of motion.

He will start his orthopedic surgeries tomorrow.

First, right arm with external fixator.

That will take about 5-6 hours. If he's stable,
they will then do lower left leg w a big rod;
then on to the right foot.

Once his chest and internals are less at risk,
they will do the second neck surgery from C1-5
as that one is done from behind.

Last night's C5-6 surgery w plating was done from the front.

Prayers welcome! Thx!

Dam, thanks for the update Scott,
please keep us posted......

Update. Guy Caputo is finally being taken surgery for the C1-2 fusion.
They will probably fuse all the way to C6. The type of instrument they
use will determine how much range of motion he will have.

Be prepared for 6-8 hours once it begins about 45 min to an hour.

He has an excellent team and the same Doctor
that did his first spine surgery is doing tonight's.

UPDATE! Great news Guy Caputo is out of surgery
yes the one that was supposed to be 6 to 8 hours!

Two hours 15 minutes later Dr. called and said
everything went well he's got the plate in C1 – 2
and he had great bone quality so the nails and
screws and pins or whatever are in there and
everything is on upward swing.

So thank you everybody for your many many
many many prayers and we will get with you again.

On another note:.......

We have all noticed that when we go on track
(and sometimes on the street) to do battle,
we wear the best of equipment:

Helmet, gloves, leathers and boots, etc.
Usually, we do NOT wear NECK protection......

Some of us recall the unfortunate racing death
of Marco Simoncelli in MotoGP.  Marco fell on
the track, was impacted by his own bike,
and then struck in the head / neck region
by another rider.

The helmet came off in the crash.

The cause of death was never announced,
but it would be easy to believe
(I have seen several video's from
different view points) that the front
wheel of the other bike struck Marco
in the neck region, and forced the helmet off.

Such an impact could have predictable results:

1)  If the impact was to the front of the neck,
than the larynx would be crushed.

The result would be death by suffocation
since the airway would be blocked.

2)  Impact to the rear of the neck could either
crush the vertebra, or cause a transection
of the spinal cord.

Both outcomes would probably be fatal.

And yet, when we see on-board shots
of the MotoGP riders, the ONLY part of
the body seen to be "bare skin" is the neck.......

Without seeing pictures or video of Guy's crash,
we cannot know if the motorcycle "jumped
up and down" on Guy's neck.

In any case, whatever the eventual outcome, we do
know that Guy is alive and improving.

Pretty lucky !

Been thinking about Guy as this progresses.  Hoping for a quick recovery and minimal lasting injuries.  My guess is that, like most of us, he's thinking in the back of his mind "that was a beautiful bike.  All that work..."  It's ingrained in riders, I believe.  Get well fast Guy!  You're a fixture in the community.
