Wilmington records to be wiped out ?
« on: June 06, 2016, 01:18:03 PM »
The ECTA seems to be ever closer to being cast
out into the night by the Wilmington Airpark.

Even the meet this month is in some doubt.

What will that mean is the ECTA moves to another track.

The last time that happened, ALL the existing records
were wiped clean, and the record book started over,
and all that history was "lost."

Will that happen again ?

If the past is a sure guide - and the thinking
has not changed - than yes,
if you hold a Wilmington record,
count on your record "disappearing."

The ECTA was originally formed
(My life-membership is #9) to be
a place for folks to test 'n tune
FOR Bonneville.

Somehow, it morphed into being a place
WHERE Bonneville folks could come
to race, not the other way around.
Hence, we would have our OWN records,
and our OWN #1 plate.

When the "association" (and I use quotation
marks since the ECTA is a private company)
moved to Wilmington, the old record books
(which included many speed records that
were the best speeds in the world, and
could therefore rightly be considered
"WORLD Records") "disappeared."

If the ECTA moves again, than they
will have to do one of two (2) things:

1)  Start over again with a new record book,
and all the "Wilmington" records will go away, or

2)  Return to an ECTA record book,
and reconcile what record is faster,
Maxton or Wilmington.

That should be a one-day job for
a good computer person, since ALL
the records - old or new -  are digital.

Starting the record book over at
every new venue hurts my heart.

Some folks work very hard, and
spend a LOT of resources to set
a "decent" record, only to have it
"disappear" when the ECTA
moves to  new track.

one mile track running records
are the same the world over,
as are one mile swimming records.

A mile is a mile, period.

I believe that the ECTA should maintain
the ASSOCIATION records, and have
the TRACK records as subsidiary records.....

My $0.02.

One mile running records are Workwide BUT every race venue has track records for sure
People should just call them "track records"  unless your name was Bill W   that was a world record   :D

What am I missing here Phil?  All the records for Altered frame, Partial Streamlining, Blown Fuel are listed.  ECTA uses the term  Special Construction for classification.  LSL
All motor all the time and a turbo now and then.

These are most of the "quick" APS/BF records,
from 750cc to 3000cc classes.

For some reason, the 3001+ class is missing.

What class of displacement did you run ?

Interestingly, the "M" (Modified) class records for 3001+
are not shown, except for the "pushrod" division.

At one time, the rules were such that there was
no 3001+ class for M, but there was such a class for A.

What year and month did you set your record,
and what displacement class was that record ?

I am not a land speed racer, but I do follow along on occasion. I always found it odd that land speed racers sought out finite differences between classes, changed a fender ot a slight aero change because they saw that a record was low and they could then be the record holder. Seems to me, the records to go after are not the easy ones, but the hardest ones. Some folks seem to be able to break 8 records a day on some outings. And then, even within the same sanction, as Scott G noted, all records vanish just from changing a track, and the cycle of "lets see what record I can most easily win" starts again.

Just seems odd to me to have so many classes and records to chase and then to just reset everything because of a track change. Do the records reset if the weather is cold or hot as well, or is there a +5 mph bonus if there is a crosswind?

With all of the venues, it is basically impossible to have a legitimate worldwide record book, especially one that ensures integrity of tech inspections.

I am certainly not trying to belittle anyone's accomplishments as I know what it takes to be a racer, but having "records" that get awarded just because you are the first person down the track in a particular class at a new venue seems a bit like handing out a participation trophy just because a rider showed up.
Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

For some odd reason the "A" 3000+ records are listed over on the "M" page.  And I "think", the M 3000+ category was removed from the rules a couple years ago.

I couldn't agree more. Especially the part I put in bold. Give me quality over quantity any day. I personally would rather have 1 highly contested record than 20 open records.

Again, that's just my personal preference. I'm not try to slam or put down anyone that likes to go out and claim a bunch of open records. It's just not my thing.

Osti, sportrider, etal...years ago at Bonneville one of biggest icons in LSR history prodded me to enter a different class, as we had set a record for existing class already ...I had NO desire..more time left want to keep after it , he said "but it will be the cheapest record you will ever set ",..I agreed wholeheartedly with the statement...but for profoundly different reasons ...and respectfully declined

with that said....(cuz I can't contain my self these days...(let's be real...about what these records are in many cases..).....to each his own..most of us respect the accomplishments for what they are ..

So, it turns out as predicted.

The Wilmington track has been lost, and
the "Wilmington" records will be lost.

IF the ECTA finds another track, the
records will "start over,"
along with the 200 mph club.
