FIM records: Significant ?...."hardest ?"....or what !
« on: July 12, 2016, 10:40:34 PM »
Why FIM ?

Is it just “hard”

Or…..is it significant ?

Well, HUNDREDS of people have
set FIM records through the years.

SURE it’s harder to set an FIM record
AT OR FASTER THAN some non- FIM records !

Does it mean you are FASTER to have an FIM record ?

Maybe not, but it DOES take twice the work, twice the risk.
and not every bike is “strong enough to go both ways.”

So, yes, and FIM record is tough !

But, is FIM “The Toughest ?

What’s tougher ?

Certainly the “old” SCTA was tougher in the by-gone 3-run days.

You had to break the record the day before
(run #1) just to be ALLOWED to run for record the next day.

The next day, you made a “down” run(2), and a “back (return) “(3) run.

If the average was “over the record”, you got the “new record.

Took THREE runs, not the “easy” FIM 2 runs……….

SO:

The “old SCTA way” required you to “qualify”
By making a run OVER the existing RECORD.

The next day, you had to make ANOTHER
run “over the record.”

So, for the SCTA that’s two (2) runs faster than the record.

For the FIM, it’s only one (1).

So:  The old SCTA records were
TWICE AS HARD as THE FIM !

In BOTH cases, you were probably NOT going to
be the “fastest” person in “your class” in the world.

You are having to make 2-3 runs, and of those,
only one (1) run will be the fastest.

Somebody else, running at Maxton, Loring or El Mirage
only has to make ONE run to be the fastest.

FIM – certainly no.

The other thing is that, at Bonneville, the air is thinner
(4250 feet altitude at the airport), and
the air often warmer (like, 100 degrees)
which can result in a density  / altitude of oh……..8,000 feet.

NOT like 45 degrees at sea level………

Easy rule of thumb is that Bonneville costs
normally-aspired engine bikes 10-15 mph……

I’ll take sea level for 10 points, please……..

Need 10 MPH to be the fastest ?

Run at 6:00 AM at Loring, and whup those Bonneville guys……

Passing thought:

The Motorcycle Land Speed record has been broken or set
maybe 31 times in almost 113 years (the first official was 1903)

How hard is that ?

If you measure “hard” on the basis of the number of people
in history who have accomplished something, that
could be a pretty good measure, and it is easy to grasp.

Example:  Compare Bonneville 200 mph Club membership
with something REALLY hard, like climbing Mt. Everest !

(This is an opportunity for Mr. 272 JOE AMO to
offer his observations, and he can tell you why………………)

Surprisingly, there have been years in which more people summited
Mt. Everest in 365 days than have EVER joined “The 200 Club.”
in ALL of history (since 1949 = 57 years)

HANDS DOWN. Joining the Bonneville 200 mph Club
is MUCH HARDER that climbing Mt. Everest !

Another thought:

For sit-on motorcycles, a quick peek at the “fastest sit on riders list”
shows Steve Knecum at 251 mph in 31st place.

So:  If a “sit on rider” could show a time-slip at 252mph or faster, he
(or she – the fastest woman is 264 mph) has done something
HARDER than break the overall FIM land speed record……….

I have no pretensions about doing any serious climbing.

My only climbing goal is to summit
the highest mountain in Florida,
which is only a few hours away,
and over 345 feet above sea level.

I practice almost every day by
getting up and down off a road curb,
usually when I get in my car.

Another year, and I will be ready........

Uuummmmm,,

Of the "world's fastest sit on riders"

only three (3) of the top six (6) are
based on the Hayabusa.

Amo rode a Kawasaki ZX10
Al Lamb rode a 1000cc Honda
and Tabouli did not use a motorcycle engine at all.

1) Bill Warner....(Larry Forstall)...311.945....LSR....Loring..2010â....
1.5 mile track Current world's best, USA best, and Loring track record

2) ERIC TABOULI.....drag/rocket....281.47 mph Santa Pod ..England 2011
Current European best

3) Joe Amo....(Scott Guthrie)....272.610........LSR..2009â....
Mile 3 to 4 average time, 1990 ZX10, Bonneville's Fastest 1000cc speed
Bonneville fastest sit-on bike.

4) Dean Sabatinelli..(Scott Guthrie)...269.776.......Busa....Loring....2010....
1.5 mile, World's Fastest Stock Body motorcycle

5) Billy Shoemaker....269.200....Busa....Mojave ....1.0 mile (age 70+)

6) Al Lamb...(Al Lamb Honda).....265.598....Honda....2012
World's Fastest record for a 1000cc open-wheel bike.
PROBABLY world's Fastest Honda sit-on Motorcycle

By year 2000, our team had done some serious
testing of the then-new Suzuki Hayabusa.

We KNEW what we had !

At the Bonneville year 2000 open-to-all
rules committee meeting on the salt, I
closed the meeting with the announcement.

"From this day forward, there will be only two
kinds of motorcycle running in Land Speed Racing.

The Hayabusa, and
the "Not-a-Busa."

I thought the tallest peak in Fl was on private land and you had to "get permission" for summit attempts

Dang it Scotty , now I have to make "excuses" for my slow time

I wanted you to have more of the story

I was way out of my element as far as the other competitors in the Everest Marathon

Around 120 +international   athletes with much much more accomplishments than I

Many ironman competitors, Everest summiteers  etc

I had hoped they wouldn't print the time , without explaining the situation

Over half the field finished in over 8 hours , many over 10 hours

Starting with spo2 70's to 60's at rest

I totally know that my placing 8 th internationally was from the power  of prayer ..and faith in redefining "comfort"

Sometimes people ...are simply the fastest in the world ...over the world LSR distance of a kilo or ame
we LOST Sam Wheeler Monday July 25 th at Bonneville pursuing that ...

he was the epitome of being "the fastest in the world..."...

without the FIM

Yes he wanted FIM

But the competitors called him like it was ...worlds fastest

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AdDuTsALSHM

At least watch first few minutes of this to see what a pioneer chasing and setting a meaningful record looks like
(i.e. when easy rider had fun at 322 , Sam had Scta record of 332 +...etc)..

you guys may notice another icon narrating a short segment on the salt
