Odd size valve shims..,.
« on: September 21, 2016, 08:24:05 AM »
Tore down valve train prior to APE doing an excellent job of overhauling the head.

The deal here is that I pulled "odd" size shims off the intake, and exhausts. I pulled a 2.82 off the intake side, and three 2.78 shims off of the exhaust side.

The rest of the intakes were 2.85, and the rest of the exhausts were 2.80's.

Now that I have new SS valves, my stem lengths are slightly longer. If I really am shooting for "middle of the range" starting gaps, where could I find odd shims ?. Everything in my Hotcams box is .05mm apart.

Really trying to get these as exact as possible.

Thanks for the read. Anyone ?

The factory is the only one with the half steps as far as I can tell at Suzuki.  I have tried ordering at the dealer and they can only get the same steps as aftermarket.
With that said... Kawasaki zx-10 shims were available in the half steps back in the 90s.... Might look there, they are the same size.  I have quite a few of them in my shim box.

Reading way too much into it. Set them up within the range and put it together. If you have to choose, set them looser rather than tighter as valves can tighten over time (although I doubt you will ever need to adjust them again)
Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

Well Thanks John, and Stainless !,

You know John, I am, I'm reading way into it, because guys like you have been keeping me continually on my toes on this first build. So far, everything is coming together excellent !.

I read .004-.008" on intakes and I think .006. Right now I've got .007". Exhausts aren't done yet, but I read .008-.012. I think .010"...and I'm trying get them all the same on each side for sanctity.

By the way, the bottom end turned out killer. Thanks guys !.

A.

PS Stainless, I'll do some searching on that !. Thank you.

Hey Astainless,

Which years ?. Found ZX10 shims at MrCycles in stepped sizes. Just need to know which years had 9.48mm diameters.

Thanks, A.

Looks like ZX12 also ran 9.48 as well.

Took a look, and MrCycles and others offer 2.375/2.425/2.475/2.525/2.575/ and 2.625.

Right now many of the intakes are around 2.45 to 2.65. Might be able to get a little closer where I'm at now.

Thanks Stainless for the recommendations.

Let's see if the exhaust side is as much different.

Morning,

Yes, the exhaust side is as much different as the intake. The intakes are in the 006-.007" range now. The exhausts are going to need a little adjustment, in that, I'm going to need more 2.60, 2.65mm shims to get this right at .009-.010".

Interesting going through this one cam at a time. I'm sure most of you do it way faster.

Have a great day !.

Anyone got a line on individual or 5-packs of Hot Cams 2.45, 2.50, 2.60, and 2.65mm shim refill kits. Need 5 of the two smaller, and 10 of the two larger kits. My intakes sucked up the 2.60, and 2.65 's.

Thanks, A.

Found them !.  Amazon.com $7 a 5 pack.......

I have actually surface ground shims to adjust my valve ±.0005
Big waste of time  .004-.008 intake and .008-.012 exhaust is plenty close enough

Thanks NOS !.

That gives me a lot of validation knowing that what I was seeking in looking for a perfect initial set on lash, was at best only "in the range" that many of you have said is all that is necessary. No performance connections to similar lash, crisper timing, or wear characteristics are to be earned getting them all the same.

I am shooting for around what Stainless, and John have said is about agreeable. Somewhere around the middle to account for a small amount of tightening up after the initial heat cycles, and a little extra, like .001" to give me a bit of insurance.

Have a great day !. A.

Even hardness tested the shims after grinding to make sure I was not removing a case hardening

That is still great engineering, and R&D doing the work to see if it resulted in improved performance without compromising durability. Great stuff !.
