Starting issues
« on: September 28, 2016, 04:44:47 PM »
Hi,  i have a 2010 Busa with 16,000km,  had it since new.
It has developed an issue with starting for some reason.
What happens is basically it doesn't wind over very fast.
You hit the button ( In neutral) it will wind over for a few turns kind of like at half speed then maybe speed up a little then fire.
But sometimes it will just do a few winds and then just stop as if it has a flat battery.
If you try to start it in gear it will pretty much just do a few winds then stop.
Today for example,  left work called into get some fuel then it only just re started.
All this is on a battery that was fully charged 3 days ago  ( bike is ridden almost every day to and from work)

It has a brand new battery in it,   brand new started motor put in it.
Has anyone else had this same sort of issue or know what might be causing this issue?
Kind of sounds like a starter clutch issue,  but not too sure.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Did you check to see if it was charging that new battery...  could be a regulator issue.... or an infant mortality problem with the new battery.

Or an infant mortality problem with the new battery.

How did it fire when you first took it off the charger? also just because its a new battery don't meen it's good, do you have a small voltmeter? if not get one, then start the bike and test voltage at the battery, you got to take the seat off, while running you should get 14.0 to 14.5 volts, also you may want to leave the tester hooked up and see what your voltage go's to while starting, if it is less than 10.5 or 11 volts there could be a problem
The older you get do you notice you start chickening out way before the bike does

I had thought of that but kind of tough on a sealed bike battery, and even if it is possable the fill holes are so small most auto testers wont go in, besides if he hooks up the volt meter while trying to start and voltage go's down to 8-9 volts starters ether pulling to much or batterys trash, I'm not sure but while cranking over the power should stay 10.5 to 11.5 volts much less and it may crank over but there's not enough juice left to work the electronic's and start the eng...........get it started and be sure its charging, and ck all battery conections and grounds double check the stator/rectifier plugs/connections, if you suspect the battery try jumping from your car (with car not running) if it still cranks hard or wont start it could starter itself,

Sorry for the delay in response.
With a fully charged battery it firers up ok,  wouldn't say in spins over like a brand new one would.
I did find out today that there is a recall on the Gen 2 regulators,  it is booked in to get that replaced for free.
Will check out the voltages and see what i get.
I was actually thinking it might of been something like the starter clutch ( i think that is what it is called)
Kind of connects to the starter motor gears  ( mine is a blue color )

Done a battery voltage check today.
Fully charged,  around 12.7v
Turn key and switch on,  12.2v
Turn evreything back off,  12.4v
Start it up and at idle 14.4v - 14.6v

Dose this sound like a bad battery and also a bad regulator?
Cheers.

Is there any particular type to go for?
I was just going to go with another ones the same as the factory battery.
If you have a link to a good lithium battery it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Will have a look at them.
How do the  lithium batteries go with the constant recharging to them.
I always thought they only liked to be ran flat then re charged,  no like the led acid batteries that come standard?
Do the  lithium batteries last long being charged constantly like this
