Front sprocket removal question???
« on: January 08, 2003, 03:33:00 PM »
I remember a post about this a while back but it didn't come up when I searched:

What's the trick/technique to removing the front sprocket?  I read my manual last night and it didn't really say much about it other than using lock-tight and 145 Newton-meters.  I remember and know that the tranny must be in neutral to avoid destroying the shift forks and either lock the rear wheel with the brake or a board through the spokes.  I also remember that using an impact wrench was advised...

Anything else?  What grade/level of lock tight should I use?

Impact makes it easy to remove but I prefer torquing it back on (105ft lbs.) Using a 32mm or
1 1/4" 6 point socket with blue lock tite. Use the brake to hold it. I'm still a sceptic about the shift fork bending but I guess anything is possible. Good Luck!

Set on the seat covering the rear brake, and use a socket wrench with a cheater pipe, for leverage. Or use an impact wrench.
