Sprocket Specialists' Quality??
« on: March 13, 2003, 09:18:00 AM »
I let my buddy ride the Busa this weekend and he busted my chain and front sprocket. The OEM chain and after market sprockets were like new (less than 1000 miles).

When I yanked everything apart, I noticed that the front sprocket had two teeth that had been broken off. This most likely was the reason the chain went.

The front and rear sprockets were purchased from "Sprocket Specialists".

The front sprocket I got from them, was not even the width of the OEM sprocket and looked a little on the 'cheap' steel side, but I threw it on anyway, hoping that the width wouldn't play a BIG role.

The cause of the teeth wear, I would assume, is due to bad wheel alignment. I did align everything a couple days before he rode, but being fair, I'd guess the wheel must have shifted on my buddy during his ride from me not torqing the rear nut enough. No doubt he was dogging her.

I've been through A LOT of chains and sprockets and have NEVER busted a street chain. This is the first. So, I have to ask:

Has anyone "ELSE" had problems with the sprockets from them?

Although the run looked true when I changed things out, did I screw up by not ensuring the front sprocket had spacers to position exactly like the OEM busa sprocket?

I've used several of their front sprockets and so far not a problem. I'd bet on a chain failure due to alignment or adjustment taking out the front sprocket. Front sprockets are usually pretty tough. Did it do any other damage?

No other, he was "Reving the engine and the fingers slipped off the clutch.."

I figured it was bad alignment, just wanted to make sure, thanks!

Just wondering, what size front sprocket was it?

My 18-tooth front sprocket and my 42 and 43-tooth aluminum rear sprockets are all from Sprocket Specialists. I've never had any issue with their sprockets.

SS has stopped selling front sprockets for Busa.  Said they were getting hammered and they were tired of replacing them for folks.  There are still some in the marketplace, but no new production.

My opinion is that the chain was loose and miss aligned. I never had any problems with S.S. and thats all I use. I will say I have seen plenty of busa pull up with the chains dragging on the ground...good maintance is mandatory!!

Had a aluminum rear sprocket on my TL1000R. Less then 500 miles. Out of 41 teeth only 7 were left.
