Tires and Dyno's
« on: May 03, 2003, 09:48:00 PM »
It is easy to understand how tire and wheel weight can affect dyno readings; both figure into mass and inertia calculations. But I recently tested a Busa with a fairly new Shinko and the results were off around 4% from a prior run under very similar conditions. Could it have something to do with its slightly smaller diameter or how the underlying tire structure behaves under testing?

I'm not talking from personal expieience but I heard that the shootout tires are no good on the dyno. they spin and you can't get the heat you need into them.
previously owned a 01 blk/gry Busa little of this little of that...oh yeah and a ghetto turbo 320horse/200ft.lb. 8.92@169

Diameter will not effect (or is it affect? I can never remember that one.) you horsepower readings.
Pardon my spelling...I cant see the keyboard!!!!!

this is what i call the velcro or bubble gum effect.
the tire becomes so sticky it does not want to release from the drum after it rolls over it
causing drum to have to pull itself free
which eats up hp
basically it is accellerating and breaking at the same time cancelling some of its own power out in the process
typically 10 hp for the shinko and 10-12 for the mcr2

The hot ticket must be to run a plain rim on the drum. No sticky factor at all - and lightweight to boot! Just put on 17 ratchet style tie downs on each side to maintain traction.

motorhead,
what about the mickey street version ( not the shootout one)???

just dynoed one with that tire and it seemed a little short (201hp -1397, cams, cleaned up head, brocks pipe)

haa..    dennis and I had this problem on a fresh 1390 on his dyno with a shinko on it.

motor set up exactly like mine but showed just over 10 hp less with that tire on it.

Ok it looks like I don't know shit!!
either way I knew that a shootout tire didn't give the best results on the dyno. I didn't however know why. now I do.
