starter just spinning

My 01' is making scary sounds like the starter is kicking back and now it's just spinning.  I already checked out the starter gears and replaced the battery.  Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Hopefully, your cases are not cracked. If it is just spinning free, the starter clutch is shot and needs to be replaced. When you replace the starter clutch, consider installing one of the  case protectors  that Schnitz offers, it is cheap insurance.
