Yosh cams installed, what octane required?
« on: July 26, 2003, 07:00:00 PM »
Ok I had yosh cams installed and Im breaking them in per the mechanics advice before the dyno. What kind of octane should I be running with the yosh cams, muzzy header, airbox mod/K@N, pair valve removed?

I already read the past octane posts to death and understand octane, Im running 89 for now. The yosh cams gave the motor more power by keeping the valves open longer via duration etc. Does this up the compression?

Compression is most likely lower, use 89-93, best HP use Ulitmate4 VP

Usually works the other way for two reasons, overlap and intake valve timing. With respect to the latter, the dynamic cylinder pressure will be reduced slightly because the intake will be closing later; this loss though will be more than offset by the power gained through holding the valve open longer and acquiring a larger charge to ignite.

Ok this guy told me to ride it for 500 miles and dont exceed 8k rpms. I have never heard of cams getting broken in before so Im gonna put maybe 300-400 just for shits and giggles.

I want to get it done so I can dyno hopefully by this friday so I can hit the strip this weekend and note the improvement. I was trying to figure out what exactly needs to be broken in.

Hey reign, I dont even wanna know whats going on with you and you know who. Hey I waned to go riding today but you didnt answer your phone, I might go and do the north shore route and come back up H3. After that Im taking the bike to the shop for the dyno, yeah that whole breaking in the cams idea doesnt make any sense at all.

Pretty good number that, Dave. Not shabby output for just cams and pipe. Anything else done to it? Ready for Viperman?
