Crankcase Windage Windows
« on: August 31, 2003, 07:55:00 AM »
One of the major motor modifications introduced in the new 1000 is crankcase windage windows, a concept described and illustrated in the accompanying link. Is this a modification that can be done after the fact without harming the structures?

GSXR1000 cases arent made like the Busa. On the 1000 the pistons cannot be pulled through the bottom so you cant slide the piston through to remove the block. The bottom of the cylinders are strengthen. That is why the windows are needed.

On the Busa block you can knotch the lower section of te
he cylinder walls between 1-2 and 3-4 cylinders. This gives about 3 to 4 horsepower.

Will it effect the nickasil coating (peeling) on the cylinders or is it best to do before sending cylider out to be bored?

Anybody wonder why zuki went this way instead of the pair/sucker mod to reduce the amount of air in the case?

Methinks its the oil pressure problem in a wet sump motor.  Not enough suction head for the pump.

I believe it has less to do with evacuating the crankcase and more to do with exploiting the windage of adjoining cylinders in different phases of the four cycle process.

Has anyone done the notching of the cylinder, and is there any negative feedback on this mod. Is this something that people are having local machine shops do or is there a recommended place?

Chevy put bigger "windows" in the LS1/LS6 engines, basically it just lets the air displaced by a piston on the downstroke move more easily - less pumping loss - to a cylinder with piston on the upstroke.
