Question about shims in head.
« on: January 22, 2004, 10:25:00 PM »
I bought a head where the shims were all removed. I did some valve work to the head which would of changed clearances anyhow. There is a range of .004-.008 on the intake side and a range of .008-.012 on the exhaust. My problem is that I installed all of the thinnest shims to get a base line and on one cylinder there is no clearance at all. That is where I had some damage repaired and the seat was re-cut. I know that I should probaly have .010 taken off of the tips of those valves. Are the shims only available in graduations of .005? I need like a .272 and I see that they go from 270 to 275 nothing in between.I do however have a .273 that was in the head already but the rest were all either 265, 270, 275, and 280. I also checked on the ron ayers webiste and they were all 255,260,265 etc...
if those are the only shims available do I need to have those valves cut so that they match up with a shim size that is available. I have all of the measurements done now I just need shims of the proper size to get the proper clearance. Is it better to be on the tight side or the loose side? I have 3 cylinders that are either right at the highest or the lowest and I didn't know if I should try and get those more in the middle of the range as well. I don't want to do this twice so any help will be appreciated.
thanks

I am sure there is a 2.72 mm shim...get em close as you can on the loose side, not on the tight side.

so would say .014 on the exhaust be to much? factory spec is .008-.012
and would you go from .009 on the intake to .004 with a shim .005 higher or would you leave it a little out of spec?
sorry so many questions I'm just trying to make sure it doesn't have to come apart again.

it's funny that the specs only have a variance of four thousandths but the shims are graduated in five thousandths     makes it a little difficult for the ones that are close.
thanks again guys. It's getting close.

Its not a 2.72 mm shim, measure with a vernier, 014 is too loose, and 004 is a little tight on in, try for 006-008, in and 009-011 on ex if you can, just try yo get them in spec, they all don't have to be perfect     btw you can get shims in .0015 increments, just don't stack them right dennis

yea I thought they were in thousandths but Speed King made me wonder. I will try and see if the dealer has some they can switch out with me.
thanks

so are they in mm or in thousandths?  Now I'm confused.
I talked to the dealer and they said they would switch out the shims with me but I'm unclear on what ones I need at this point.

if someone wants to call me and explain that would be great

The shims are in mm 270 = 2.70 mm & they come in .05 mm (.00196") increments so you would never need a half size. If you measure an intake at .009" & had a 270 in place a 275 would give .007", and a 280 would give .005". The clearance will tighten up, never loosen when run especially when you cut the seats. The valves wear into the seat & the clearance tightens up.

if your shims are real small just make sure
your bucket is sitting on the shim
 NOT THE RETAINER
or it wont matter what shim you put in it will still be tight!
If thats your problem you can mill the top of the retainer.
