Fuel injection talk here...
« Reply #25 on: January 18, 2004, 01:36:00 PM »
From Dodobird
quote:
A smooth finish is desireable because it eliminates any build up in the intake, intake turns are what cause pooling of the fuel, and 90% of the atomization takes place in the cylinder by the squish bands and temps ect. The intake walls dont hurt to be rough for airflow because their is a boundry layer thats formed thats a few thousands of and inch thick. So smooth is best. This comes from 40yrs of airflow research and not BS. And no , I didnt do the research.
That sounds like Branch. SAE research has found that a mirror finish doesn't improve airflow nor does a rough finish promote atomization probably for the reason Branch states that there is no movement on the walls.

Both the smooth and polished ports allow the formation of slow moving air surfaces (boundary layers), though the boundary layers of smooth surfaces tend to be less lazy than those of polished surfaces. It is this "less lazy" feature that is said assist with atomization or reduced puddling and better deal with the "bad" turbulence created by velocity and pressure differentials arising from turns.

Funny thing, Jerry was the one to advocate 28" for realistic #'s. I think alot of bike guys use 10" because they have small benches. A small Superflow doesn't pull anything. From what I've seen and men I know 28" is the benchmark:beechug:

No Yngve itīs more like 287cfm @ 28" of water.
28/10=2,8 and the square root from that = 1,67332
multiplyed with the cfm @ 10" of water.
Now this is with 35mm intakes, but still very
good. Oh by the way Yngve My head flowed more
than Yourīs ...hehe

Well now I'm very confused because his website specifically states all their initial work is tested on a bench. It even shows a head set up in a picture. I sense bullshit.

I would tend to think "concepts" would first have to be validated by use of the flow bench and velocity probes. But, hell, what do I know.

If he comes up with a different head shape he might use it for shits and giggles.. He's hand ported alot of heads in his time, he'll be the 1st to tell you he barely uses it. Now traces a head at 1st, now thats on file. Then hits the switch, all heads identicle, no need to flow. Thats a 1/4 millond dallar machine he's got there. Hass 5 axis horizontal

that would explain why he's so damn expensive then.

Was Rick pulling 10" or 28" for those #'s. His unit should pull 400CFM.
