NEED HELP.. Installing a 16T front sprocket.
« on: April 08, 2004, 10:08:36 PM »
Im in the process of installing a 16T front sprocket. I took the allen head bolt out along with the other piece. Here is a picture below of where I am now. I have the bike in 1st gear and cannot break that bastard 1 1/4" sprocket nut loose. Is there something that I missed that is holding it back from loosening or could it be just that damn tight?

use a breaker bar with a cheater (a pipe for extra leverage) I changed mine and when it broke loose it made a loud pop -it's tight and has loctite on the threads.

you should use an impact gun to take the nut off with the trans in nutral

or like eddie said with a breaker bar and pipe and a piece of 2x4 through the wheel and up against the swingarm.

2x4 through the wheel.  use a blanket or towel so you do not scratch the wheel or swing arm.
I find myself alone more and more the older i get....but i seem to like the company a whole lot better!!

Bunch of pansies......

Put bike in top gear, not first (least mechanical advantage for the engine over the drivetrain), depress the rear brake, and take it off with a breaker bar. Nut is on with 105 ft lbs of torque.

I broke that bastard nut loose, installed the 16T sprocket (that I got from parts-slut haha), used some red cap lock tight, and have been riding it for the past couple days.. When it broke loose, there was a LOUD pop! I dont see much of a difference since the mod, but Im sure the difference will show on my next time slip...  :)
Oh yeah, I had a buddy tell me that going -1 tooth up front is equal to going +3 in the back? Is this true?

Thanks for the help and here is a few pics.. (Check out my pipe for leverage!)

good job

-1 in front is about +2.5 or 3 in the rear
