Is a longer than stock wheelbase necessary on a Busa for high speed stuff?

I know it is needed on the street and the dragstrip for high horsepower applications, but is it really needed for Bonneville?

I've never seen a Busa unstable at speed, but have not been on one at extreme speeds without a long arm.

What do you guys think?

Even though I do not ride one, the fastest "Vehicle" at Maxton can go 250 MPH in the Mile is a "Busa" and has a Braced "Stock" arm and stock wheelbase! So since I do not think your Bus will be going any faster :D, I think you have to be safe at under 200.

I'm building a turbo Busa for Bonneville, and looking to go over 250 if I can...

By the way your question was poised, it looked more like "Is it necessary for the people that do have longer arms for Bonneville" as opposed to what you were looking at!

Maxton has no traction so you must have weight transer to go fast. Bonneville / Salt (I have never raced there but have been on dirt) you really want some stability. I would ask Speed King who has done it there. Remember, the longer the wheelbase, the slower reacting the bike becomes.

Didn't like my MCX Busa with stock wheelbase.  Front end was way too light even in 6th gear and impossible to control.  Got some headshake I didn't like.  At +4 it's a great streetbike and I think would do well at high speed.

I ran the ZX-11 at about +4 at Maxton.

All depends on rider weight, power level, etc.

Danno for whats its worth , I ran a lowly 203 mph on salt( busa + nitrous)  with a stock swing arm  the bike was rock steady at all times  even with the back wheel spinning at over 200  the main problem you will find is piss poor traction , im adding a 6" over for next year as I have been able to add over 60 KG ( aprox 150 lb) to this arm  along with that much again to the frame and other places on the bike , prolly the heavest bussa in the world but hopefully it will have some reasonable traction for next year along with  350+ RWHP
good luck with the project  :)

Thanks for the info.
I ran there last year on Hanks bike, but it had an arm on it. Just wondering if it's really necessary at Bonneville as wheelies are not an issue.

I'd watch how much weight you add to the bike, you don't want to overload the tires weight capacity...

I think both Danno and Gary will be exploring some interesting terrain in the coming years.

This is the kind of thread that I find both informative and interesting.

I'd think the longer swingarm would move the center of gravity of the bike forward, which is not ideal considering traction issues. Unless of course you are filling the arm with enriched uranium (which Hawkwind seems to be doing).

I think Professor Hill meant that Bonneville has no traction.  Maxton is a concrete runway with BooKoo traction.  And as far as busting #8's Azz, Wow!  Any bike going faster than 250 in just 1 mile would have to have over 500HP and sustain it for quite a while.  You Da Man if you can carry it off.
Personally, I will be in heaven to bust a 230 against the likes of Professor Hill on his mean green speed machine and the Scott Guthrie Racing team in May.  I have a 28 degree rake with a 4.5 inch extended arm giving me a total of 7 inches overall axle to axle length.  I love the ride.  Smooth, low and steady.

Thanks Guy, Actually I should have said that Maxton has no traction "Compared to a prepared Drag Strip"! (I mentioned this because a lot of people came from Drag Racing to Land SPeed Racing thinking that it is a 1 mile Drag Race). We "ALL" know that there is "NO" Traction at Bonneville which is why you need a few miles to "EASE" up to the speed and you need over drive gearing for the much higher wheel speed vs the true "Land Speed". Using a lot longer Arm at Maxton "WILL" cause a total loss of traction. Here is an example of what I am talking about.

Here is a picture of the bike in question getting ready for the run.

Plus he uses a tire warmer :D:D I hope this helps clear up what I meant to say.

Correctta Mundo Professor, as compared to a prepared Dragstrip, Maxton is not.  But is is 500% better than the salt or dirt.  No matter, I clutch ride it out hard to 60ft than whack it once rolling.  But then again, I'm not using a 400+hp turbo either.

Just 500% :)  I do not "Yet" Have the "Intestical Fortitude" to ride the salt "YET" :(  The only reason I spoke about (Bad) about traction is this person is talking about longer arms which are great for a "Real" drag strip, but lacking a little at Maxton. The person that said about 3 Inches over depending on the rider and bike hit the nail on the head. I have to be a lot shorter for Randall (Randall can dump the clutch and the bike does not even fall off the RPM's like it does for me even when riding the clutch and spinning the tire a little) than for me (or you :)) at Maxton.

Most of you are missing the real question...

Is the extra length needed for stability at Bonneville, or is the bike stable enough at 250+ to not need a long arm?

I don't think it is needed, but am looking for insight from those that have tried Bonneville with stock arms.

Well Dan, you've already gone faster than most at Bonneville. Didn't you run 209mph on Hanks "pit bike". Anyway, I guess Dennis, Hank, or John could best answer your question. I'm looking forward to Bonneville, maybe I'll be able to help you this year. 8)

Busa went 227 over a mile at Bonne with a  stock rake and arm..what are your plans for your boosted Busa at Bonne this year and next.

Your too tall, better let your jockey ride...AKA Rickster.. :D
