Are k and N airfilters possibly harmful?
« on: April 09, 2004, 06:47:20 PM »
I have a k and n for my busa and was about to install but a friend of mine said he read somewhere that it will actually harm horsepower? He said they only work on a busa that has got a full exhaust and been remapped and so on. Does anyone know anything about this i am very curious. Thanks for any help you can provide

Yes, K and N air filters can be bad, like any reusable air filter, if they are over oiled.  The B&M race filter is better anyways.

So does that mean they are only bad if overoiled or they are just bad period?

I run a K&N with my turbo, that is what velocity provides, that is what Dennis uses.  K&N filters are fine as long as they are properly maintained.

But for a busa with the stock airbox it is better to run the BMC race air filter than the K&N.

They are only harmfull if you oil them up and not fry them until they are golden brown, I heard the oil causes cancer.... just kidding I agree with cbriggs..

My guess is what your friend meant had more to do with increased airflow without altering the fuel maps to compensate for (or take advantage of) it.  I'm doubting you'd notice at all if that's all you're changing.

But yeah, don't over-oil it.  Easy to do, pain to undo.
