I'm getting a *slip* in 2nd gear
« on: April 18, 2004, 06:27:49 PM »
Anybody ever heard of the transmission going bad on the Busa?  I have an '02, PCIIIr, 10,000 miles.  Rolling hard in 2nd gear, I get a sudden slip.  At first, I thought my chain was loose, jumping a tooth or something.  Checked chain, it's fine.  I even have a new clutch (unrelated problem).  Somebody mentioned that it might be due to my 2nd gear rounding off a gear tooth, and may have to replace it.  Anybody have this problem, or ever fixed a tranny???  :(

Drop the engine?

How hard is it to replace all this stuff, without dropping the engine, or cracking the case open?  Is this even possible?

Impossible,  cases gotta split to pull the transmission, and gotta pull engine for that,  I know you can change out 1 of the shift forks for a fact,  looks like with some effort could change the other 2 as well,  without splitting, but no tranny gears.

My bike does exactly the same thing, thought it was the chain or sprockets. I am sure 2nd gear is toast though and its skipping in and out.  Time to pull the tranny, replace 2nd gear, all the forks and shafts.  Then under cut the whole damn thing.  Might slap a drum mod on er also.  $500 later (if you pull it out yourself) you should be shifting like a hot knife through butter.

If I just leave it be right now, how long will it last before it is absolutely necessary?  I don't track the bike...
Will it just keep getting worse and worse, affecting ALL gears?

Depending on whats wrong with it, its only gonna get worse.  Mine has been doing it for about 1k miles.  Mine still upshifts fine but its a little clunky on down shifts.  Right now you are prolly just tearing up the dogs and forks.  Longer you run it, more chance of tearing up gears and shafts, not to mention the metal chunks that could be dumping in the oil.  I on the other hand, am leaving mine until it really fucks up cause I am a PO MO FO.  When it starts screwin up on up shifts or jumping out of gear etc, I will pull er down.  I am not racing any right now anyway. :(

How hard is it to drop an engine.  I'm mechanically inclined, but am I going to get *lost* doing this myself?

It's gonna get much worse to the point of making grinding noises. How do I know this? My Y2k started doing the same, and now at 58k miles I'm pulling the motor out and re-doing it all.

I ended up with a rattling noise in the box when in neutral. There must be a major bend in the shift fork for that to happen. When I'm done stripping her down, I'll post pics so that you can see. Not sure when I'm gonna get it done though ...

My recommendation is to get it done as soon as you can before it gets worse.

Hope this helps.

choco is right i just finished mine. Send your gears drum shafts all of it to MRE they will tell you whatever you need etc. they undercut all my gears magnufluxed them and i got two chromoly shift shafts from them for just a tad over 300 dollars. I had to spend like 50 on a shift fork too and like another 60 on complete gasket set...had a good friend help me do it all. drop motor etc.We had already done his twice so we knew what to do..
take digital pics as you tear down then if you have a question refer to your pics along with the cd or manuel on bike it really is very easy just time consuming..i could do it all in one day but i never had just one day i could spend on it so it 3 hours here 2 there etc. Might as well mod your clutch while your in there too i did. ultra brock and cushion big diff now...
good luck do it yourself you will have the satisfaction knowing its done right and everything is toque etc instead of some wet ear pencil neck from mmi trying to beat a clock doing it. My two cents :o

I got mine apart now, the middle shift for was TOAST and the others are not great.  I am putting in the 04 shift forks (3) and a MOTORHEAD undercut tranny.  Drum looked really good for the mileage (20k).  Hopefully it all comes out well.  LOTS of little parts in there......Don't forget about the case bolt under the balancer.

BTW, it took me 10hrs to get the motor out and cases apart.    This is my first busa  R&R though....

Man, those cases are a BITCH to get back together, shift forks kept moving etc, took about 10 tries to get that shit together.  I hope it don't leak.

All right, back to the bat cave...

Just sealed that biatch up, seems to shift into all the gears while sitting on the floor so I guess I'm good to go.  Now I got to rip the head and cylinder off to slap in a spacer and take it to get the cams degreed then back in the bike....
