I've been told that all the starter problems that have plagued the busa have been fixed at the factory on the 04 model.  So, there was no need for the bigger starter gear after increasing displacement.  Is there any truth to this?  And is this is truth what did Suzuki do to fix this?

The "fix" actually occured in 03. The starter has a longer shaft, but more importantly, the gear that meshes with the starter has been replaced with a one-way clutch assembly. If the motor tries to kick back, the gear will just freewheel, saving the cases.

John, what's the story when people put in Higher than std C/R pistons running stock cams / timing. Does JE or any other piston manufacturer recommend caution on the starter / battery cond ? or is this issue left to the discretion of the owner / installer / purchaser?

We have explained to the dealers and Engine builders that we recommend a perfect battery,  prefer two batteries, opening the throttle a little when starting etc..

I have done 3  1397 kits with stock heads and 2 of 3 are running and starting fine with one battery.  One went to a two battery set up.

I disagree from personal experience. My bike broke the starter clutch when it was new. Battery was never low and never cranked slow. Bikes a 2000. A close friend of mine broke his also on a 2002 with less than 400 miles and he also stated that his batery was not an issue. I cant speak for the condition of is battery but I can for mine. These are starter clutch breaks, not starter gear breaks.
Pardon my spelling...I cant see the keyboard!!!!!
