178.37677 on a Suzuki GSXR600
« on: November 01, 2004, 08:02:36 PM »
Since nobody talks a lot about the little bikes I thought I better chime in here among all these big bike war stories and tell what we did.

I showed up in April on an all stock GSXR600 and it ran 152.xxx as delivered from Suzuki. Started removing mirrors, fenders changing gearing and got up to 158.XXX

Came back later with brock hindle exhaust pcIII and race gas and did 168.xxx.

Then with a KWS prepped 2mm (636cc)over engine with JE pistons, millinium plating, brock clutch, web cams, motul 300v oil, KWS head work she busted out the fastest GAS pass in 650cc open wheel ever, anywhere.
That is the number you see above.

Even with my 175lb self it ran an entry speed of 175.68 for a timing light average of 174.99

This is a little 600 that can be ridden everyday with no crazy compression etc. Its runs like a stocker just FASTER.

Kudos to KWS Motorsports for giving me all this HP and to some good conditions at Maxton. And mostly thanks to the rider for pulling the trigger on a run of a lifetme like this.

Don,

Awesome job with the little guy...my bad for not mentioning your results!!! It even went 175 with you on it!!...LOL Seriously, NICE WORK!!!

Sorry bout the spray...couldn't get myself to do it after the 215 lost pass...and watchin 2 other's lose a motor. Would have sucked to spray it, hurt it, set the record, and lose it to the lights....

Wanna buy a wet system????

Great post Don, after all that's what it's all about.  Thanks for documenting your progress and results.  I think more people would be interested in an article about this, maybe a piece done over time showing the real behind the scenes of land speed racing, even on a 600.  Very impressive.

This whole project will be written up in Super Streetbike magazine in a few months. I think it will be early spring before it hits the stand. For now the next few issues will have how to articles on it. Clutch cushion in this issue, brakes in the next then lowering links, chain, stand etc.

Then a big wrap up article with model photos etc.

email me off the list and I will mail them to you. Since I am trying to sell photos to magazines they typically dont want stuff that has been all over the net.

I have lots of the zx-10 and the vulcan not sure about your 9 though

Tim it torn up about his record you got. Called me twice today about it even

Don,
Fantastic job, riding and tweaking. It is always great to see you out at Maxton. You are definitely one of the people that make this venue so great to run. Looking forward to seeing the story. Have you thought about putting in two engines and running the 1350 class

This was one of the best post yet...First off Congrats, thats alot out of 600cc...Second I printed this out for a guy I work with. He has a GSXR600 2001 all stock but has Yosh slip-on, This is the only sportbike he has ever ridden and is always trying to race my Busa, He swears he can hang top end and in the Quarter...Your post left him speechless...Thanks :D

Normally my projects stay a little closer to what is available on the showroom floor else I find it hard to get the magazines interested in buying my articles. Which is really my goal in the end. 2 years ago I had never made a pass at Maxton and stood by and watched others like Shierts and Barry Hensen ride my project bikes. Now I ride my own until my aero package becomes too bad and I yield to a rider with a little less girth than me. I lost almost 25 lbs this year to get to the 172 I weighed in at the last three meets.

I may push hard next year and try the 165lb class hopefully on a 2005 GSXR1000 and maybe a busa project that is just getting started now. The 1000 is not even out yet so who knows if that will work out.

If anyone wants to own the fastest 600 it will be for sale soon !!
