How often should I clean the oil pick-up. I have been doing it every other clutch. Too often or not enough?

My buddie went threw like 20 sets of clutches on His 01 and didn't clean it once!!

Good thing He got rid of that bike!!

And He also said to gear it to shit..it helped,and use only OEM clutches..
