Launching your bike - at Maxton, Texas Mile Etc.. How To
« on: April 20, 2005, 10:53:54 AM »
First time poster long-time lurker.. Hello Everyone..

Am awaiting the delivery of my 05 LE Busa here in Houston -- (The keep saying next week for the 17th time) -

Anyway - I was wondering how you guys/gals take off at the starting line in the one mile events - Is it like at the drag strip? May be a silly question but it just popped up in my mind and wanted to know...

Thanks,

-Chris

No, think at one time people left somewhat leisurely but now - as I understand - you leave like a 1/4 mile drag race.

Thanks Steve -- I was guessing along those lines -- Went out and bought a 97 Gixxer 1100w drag bike to practice on until the Busa arrives -- Boy do I have a lot of work to do!  :P

Everyone has a different style and each bike is very different. I have played with it a little either way and for some odd reason it really did not seem to make a lot of difference. Go figure, but ask the guys here that are realy going fast. I am just a novice with little insight.

Hope you make it out in October, I hear there will be some fast bikes out.
We will try to be there again, maybe this time 200mph. I do have a ZX-12 though and I do not think I can get much more out of it without going into the engine. I am rather big boned though (250lbs. unleathered)
        I am sure some skinny guy could have gone 200 by now, but I still have one last trick to try.

If you need anything done on your bike, shoot JohnnnyCheese a PM.

THERE ARE A LOT OF VARIABLES OF COURSE BUT IF YOUR BIKE IS NOT AN EXTREME POWERHOUSE I WOULD LEAVE AS HARD AS YOU CAN.
SCOTT GUTHRIE HAS A STORY ABOUT THIS BUT I DO NOT REMEMBER ALL THE DEATILS SO I WILL LET HIM TELL IT. IT HAS TO DO WITH SOMEONE LEAVING IN 6TH GEAR INSTEAD OF FIRST! AND THE RESULTS.

Nice  8)  8)  8)  Bike, those rotors are smooth. What did you have
to do to it to get it to 200. Any advice, I am about 4 1/4 MPH
short :D  :D  :D , But i hear thats a long way. I have one
last card before I have to get into the engine. Any minor tweeks,
tips, advice would be most welcome.

Take off as hard as the concrete will allow with your particular rear tire compound and air pressure preferences.  I treat it as a 1 mile drag race without the 60' times.  Tuck tight, streamline and get small, nothing to it.

to get the bike to go 200 i first of all had an exellent rider in chad millholland whos has put 3 or 4 bikes over 200.
the bike is a 98 zx9 with wiseco 973 kit fully ported head webb cams and 48 shot of nitrous (wet)
we had to run an 18 tooth front sprocket and 38 rear (stock is 16-41)
good luck

Being an Outsider watching the Parade, I watched Scott eat up a clutch and run in the 190 taking off in "6th" gear just to save the rest of us a lot of Launch excitement!

I have also watched Lee take off and spend the entire run in a losing effort to keep the front wheel on the ground. Then I watch the 200 MPH Cars being "Pushed" by a pick up truck until they can pull first gear and they run over 200..

I think the deal is not to waste time and have TORQUE to Push the air out of the way.

The Smile of the day goes to GUY! "Make yourself SMALL" If I split myself in two, Each of the Halves would weigh more than either of Dan's sons. Guy get Small PLEAZE!

Any advice for me Mr. Hill? I need 4 1/4 more :D  :D  :D

Stock engine with muzzy stealth kit (68HP), JC tuned.

Next time I am going to put airshifter, lower it, maybe
lose 10lbs. , but I still hear the last few MPH are the hardest.

Went out to practice my launch this evening at 1/8 mile strip in houston ...was about 40 feet past the tree and hit a slick spot of some sort and came out the other side to hook it really good..bike was comming over on top of me and i let go...it just missed landing on top of yours truly..it landed upside down though... what a mess...even smashed the guages..

Will be pretty stiff in the morning..me thinks..

Since others have stepped up and responded, here is my 2 cents worth:

Unless you are trying to set a record : I would recommend just leaving the line "aggressively", not drag strip style. The last 1/2 mile is much more important than the first 1/4. In my car, I've done it both ways just find out it only meant about 1 and not more than 2 mph on the top end. On my 'Busa, the last pass I did in April, I forgot to shift out of 5th at my normal 10200 and shifted at around 10500 or so instead, lost 1.5 mph(of course I got blown from the left side of the track to right side about that time from a 30 mph crosswind    ).

Blown from the left to the right side of the track...bet that got the hairs on the back of your neck going straight out!

Everyone - Thank You for all the info

- Have to go and get an estimate on rebuilding the gixxer this morning or selling it for parts...

Angie (ZX12 Girl on Bikeland) did something like what you did but it got her leg to boot! Glad you did not break anything.  You also gave a good description of what happened also.  AT least it was not at High speed and the damage is plastic and Gauges. Faster would have meant serious Parts. Call the better Bike Grave Yards and get a set of gauges.

Yes, you are 100% correct! I have run 195 to 199+ several times but missed my .6 MPH. Everything can consiper against you and you do not need the Drag stat, but you also cannot miss gears or be of line

I know a lot of times a little wheelspin at the 1/4 mile track can mean a higher et but produce a higher mph. My highest mph with my track bike always came with a poor 60'. Do you find that also at a 1 mile track?
Pardon my spelling...I cant see the keyboard!!!!!

Between high tire pressures and "dirty" concrete, it's easy to spin if you launch hard at Maxton.
My best results have came with hard launches but there's so many other things to be concerned with during the run too for a good pass, because it passes pretty quick.
