Bad helmet vibration at speeds over 160mph (blurred vision)
« on: April 03, 2005, 09:04:42 PM »
The last couple of times I have run up the speed I have run into some bad helmet buffeting. I have a ZG double bubble and am as tucked as possible wearing a Shoe RF700 (I think...might be a 600). Today it got pretty bad at 160 and by 175 my vision was so blurred I had to back out of it. This was running with the wind. I did lose a lot of weight and my helmet is slightly looser than it used to be but not what I would call too loose. Yes, apparently I had a fat head. My impression was that if the helmet was tighter the problem would have been just as bad. Anyway, thought this would be the right forum to ask. What kind of helmets are you guys using.
Pardon my spelling...I cant see the keyboard!!!!!

One of the problems I have with helmets is I have kind of a prominent nose and chin. The Shoei are kinda pointy in front and give me some more room.

I took this Arai up to 242, no issues at all.

Even at 175-200 MPH when I would sit up slightly on decel, no buffeting at all.

Hank borrowed it and went 220 or so on a test run, I don't believe he had any buffeting problems.

Does your helmet have vents on it?

You need to try on whatever particular helmet you're looking at. The only Arai model that fits me, is the Signet GT, or Signet GTR.

A Shoei RF-700?, that has to be at least 8 years old?, treat yourself to a new lid.

I had an RF-700 too, maybe the Arai Signet GT/GTR would fit you?.

That was a cool day Troy, I should've taken a picture of the look you had on your face, when Jason and I picked you up at the end of the course.  :D  8)

I just bought the Shoei X-11. This helmet is so comfortable and so light...

I have a Suomy Gunwind now, and I like it. But when I went to buy a brand new one, I tried the new Suomy, the Arai RX7RR, Arai Quantum, Shoei RF-1000, and the Shoei X-11. For me, there was no doubt.
But everybody's head is shaped differently, so it's no secret that you should try them on before making a final decision...

Stroke,

I get some buffeting at Maxton when I raise out of my tuck.....this is with my Arai....I'm sure most helmets will be the same....you are in the "dirty air" off the windscreen....

Can you tuck lower???

I have a Shoei also and I have gone 220mph with no front bodywork and I can see fine..I have also gone over 250mph with the same helmet, are you lying the helmet on the tank as you are running?  I ran another brand two years ago and went similar speeds with no helmet problems, it could be that the hemet that you have is not the correct size for you and is moving around too much..

The helmet has loosened up a bit as I lost a bunch weight per my first post. Doesnt seem that loose though...just not as snug as it used to be. It was also pushing back against my chin and nose more than I remember so maybe ithas loosened up a lot.  I get down as low as I can go at 6'4". I might be able to get lower w/o the hump on. Is the shoei you use also and x-11? That one keeps coming up in my research as a great helmet with outstanding ventilation which is a big factor here in Florida.

I think my helmet is an RX-8?

The other day when this was happening I tried moving around. At 6'4" getting flat is tough. I have to actually lift my ass and slide back to get behind the screen. That makes cranking my head back far enough to see under the edge of the helmet pretty tough. The best
i could do was to put the front of the helmet just above the visor right against the windscreen. When I tuck like the guy in the pic i cant see above the guages. Guess I need to work on my neck flexibility as well. Going hemet shopping tomorrow.

Stroke,

It is tough to get low and see....The eyeport on our helmets is too low to see out of tucked in tight. There was somebody(roadracer) who sells helmets with an extended height eyeport...Think he worked at Vanson.

The guy in the pic(me) can barely see the track tucked in that low....but that is at Maxton...and one of the reasons I run so well there.

Slammed tank seems to help , puts your body at a better position and takes some angle out of your neck.

I finally found one dealer about 50 miles from me that has a decent selection of helmets. Going up there tomorrow to try on some stuff and see what fits well. Thanks for all  the suggestions.
