$800.00 project Busa
« on: May 12, 2005, 12:44:12 AM »
This is what is the start of an $800.00 project looks like

It all started when an 80 yr old cager turned left in front of me and totaled my bike.  It also did around $70K worth of damage to my leg

I was able to buy the bike back from the insurance.  Have all the new plastic, new 04 Gold Forks and calipers, 03 wheels.  Just have to figure out what color to paint it.  There will be more pictures posted as work progresses.  The project will be slower than I want, as my sons have a couple of projects that they think are more important than Dad's bike. They think that since I also have a DL1000, the Busa is not as important as theirs.  The one good thing about the wreck is that it got a blind cager off of the road so he won't hurt anyone else.

Yup, the other guy's insurance was going to pay me around $9,300.00, but said I had to send THEM the SIGNED title before they would send me the check I told them they were idiots and I didn't trust them.  I then asked what it would cost to keep the bike.  They said they would send me a check for $8,500, so thats what I did, kept the bike and took the $8,500 check.  I couldn't really part with my 19 year old mistress, Miss Busa.

I have finally collected enough parts, new forks, wheel, plastic, etc to be able to put it back together.  The only problem is that the plastic is all in perfect shape with original finish, no scratches, but nothing is the same color.  So I am going to paint it a custom color, probably a shade of red, and maybe get the wheels powder coated red.

Thanks for asking guys.  The leg is mending, the bone is still not fully healed, there is about 1/2 of it still looking like it is cracked when they X-Ray after almost 5 months.  I bought a DL1000 V-Strom because my leg doesn't bend enough for a long enough period of time to ride the Busa.  Hopefully by this time next year I will be able to stay on it for at least a couple of hours at a time.  I put my cane over the bars and go for it.  The looks I get when I get off the bike and use my cane are almost worth the price of the wreck, well, maybe not.  Miss Busa has new gold forks and calipers, round wheels, new radiator, another new set of Yoshi Carbon Fiber Slip on's, the old ones had 1,000 miles on them, and a complete set of new plastic.  The only problem is that none of the plastic pieces are the same color.

Hey, that looks like a Femur... only broken.
I thought I was looking at one of my x-rays for a second there.  I had the same break, but I was stuck in the middle of a lake for 10 minutes until my buddy pulled me back to shore.
Fun stuff!

Here is what she looks like now.  With help from my friends at work who sent some care packages for Miss Busa, E-Bay and my son, especially my son she is up and running.

He and I are now planning a road trip for his graduation present/trip.  We are taking my V-Strom and Busa from Texas to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and then down the Coast Highway in California until we hit Mexico and then turn left and come home.

I had this same type of accident.  I brought the bike back from the insurance co. also.  and finally got it up in running in about a yerars time.  I had to replace my frame also and plastic.  My bike looked exactly like yours :) :)
