Best Tires for Maxton? For Land SPeed Racing Period!
« on: May 31, 2005, 04:10:20 PM »
I have used a Dunlop 207 then a 208,  17 x 200 but Randall cannot find traction (100 pounds makes a real difference :D)

I am looking at the Dunlop 208 Road Race but the size is 17 x 180

What are you guys using? Guy, Dave Owens, Scott, Bergie? Since Guy & Bergie are between Randall's and my weight, that will get me 1/2 way there! Scott is the closest to Randall in weight (I guess about 165 to 170) with Randall fully dressed at 150!

I just got a call from Pierre in South Africa. They have a 3 mile Runway that the Space Shuttle uses if the over shoot Kennedy (or have problems) He wantes to know what tire is best for close to 275 MPH? What are the guys in the streamliners using? What does anyone feel safe with at over 250?

Thanks, What is the largest size? Speed rating? Your Bike and your weight? (Remember, I have not spun the tire either :D it is when the bike comes out of "Weight training" and put Randall on it that I have the problems  )

Ask Guy, Lee, Dave O and R. Yancy what tire they are using to compare.  I would guess you're going to need a lot more than what the stock Dunlop 208 (that I used) has to offer there VH, especially if you are spraying +150.

All but Yancy included in the above! I know what Yancy is using (Road Race Style slicks that are shaved and pre-heated) I am no where near that yet.

I found a source for scuffed Supercorsas in SC1, 2 or 3. I think some of them are using the 2's. 190/55/17 for ~ $130 -- $150 shipped.

Of course paid for by the US Government and (At that time) Cheap Labor. The area is secure when the Shuttle is up. I think that there are 6 such places around the world. Have you seen the Runway at Kennedy? (You could do a Land Speed Race "ACROSS" it let alone down it.)

The 208 Dunlop is a great tire but is Hard. Jim Owens went right at 220 top speed with one. My problem is Randall! After having the bike in Weight training for all of these years, when Randall gets on all he does is spin up the tire. Did not make 200 on the rev limiter geared 19 / 42 I went the same speed geared 19 /. 46

I'd say Randall's issue is more about throttle control and you should be using a progressive controller on that 150 dose of spray instead of kicking all 150 on at once on a D208.  Spray it in 5th and ramp up the power from 50 to 150 over a few seconds.

You guys tickle me!!  Speed King, no argument from me on the Integrity of the tire (I feel safe on it).

We did try to "Ramp up the controller" and came in at the lowest setting which was about 30 Hp up to max in 3 seconds and allowed it to reset for each shift or lift. Randall spins the the tire almost the entire length of Maxton and can wear out a tire in about 4 to 6 runs. The problem is, you cannot lift with the NOS because you must be at 100% throttle to use the NOS. I shortened to wheel base to the point of wheelies so now he has the front up and the rear spinning. (I do not have any of these problems :D:D)

Part of Randall's problem is weight distribution. Most people at 140 to 150 are about 5' 3" to 5' 8" Randall is close to 6'2" and the bike thinks it is on a run by itself   I think a softer tire will help him and no difference for me.  Thanks for the Help.

Anyone with ideas of what Pierre should be using? I will let him know that a shaved 208 Dunlop is at least good for 260

Ive seen the runway at Kennedy. You can see the curvature of the earth when you stand in the middle and look either way. Kinda of weird to see that and know that its perfectly level .
