clunking sound
« on: July 29, 2005, 11:06:39 PM »
I have an 05' Busa and starting to hear what sounds like a clunking sound
coming from the bike when pulling out from a dead stop when releasing the clutch lever.Checked the chain, axle nut and swing arm and cannot
find anything wrong and it only does it in 1st gear when pulling out.
Has any one ever experienced this problem before?

I hear a clunking sound also on my 04 all the time when I go from a stop.  It worried me at first but like you I never found the source of the noise and finally assumed its something in the gear box.  I've had the bike for about a year now, have 4k+ miles and the noise hasn't been more than an audio annoyance so I figure it's not a problem.

Could the sound be from the cush drive?

Sorry guys but don't want to sound stupid. What is the cush drive?
Is it something that can be fixed or is it normal to sound like that?

The cush drive (drive cushion would be a better description) is the rubber pieces that fit between the rear sprocket and the rear wheel.  They allow some back and forth movement.  I change mine whenever I change my chain, as they will get worn and cause some slack in the driveline.

That said, I don't see that rubber makin' much of a "clunking" noise.

Well if his noise generator is the same as mine it's not pieces of rubber coming together. It's kinda like the clunk you get from some bikes when you put them in first gear.

its when the rubber in the cush drive gets worn out that it starts making the clunking sound.  A cush drive should last at least 15K miles, unless the dealer didn't install it properly when they prepped your bike.  Mine lasted 30K.

I think you hit the nail on the head. That's kinda what it sounds like and
I forgot to mention that the sound only accurs after the bike is warmed up.
and the bike only has 900mi. on it.Do you guys think it could be something in the clutch?

Check your chain. I noticed when I put the lowering links on the back my chain got sloppy and it made a clunking noise some times. If you have not done the 600 mile maintaince then the chain might be lose. Long shot but worth looking into.

I have the same noise on my 04. It is not the cush drive. I installed aftermarket wheels with a different design cush drive & the  noise is still there.

IMHO it is either the dog bones moving around (they have side to side play) or the rear brake pads moving in the calipers as you roll out from a stop.

Clean and lube the shit out of your chain, I would be willing to bet this is what it is.  Put it on a rear stand and rotate the tire and look for tight spots, if you don't find any clean it very well, take it for a ten minute ride come back and put it on a stand then spray it with chain wax while the chain is still warm and then let it cool down.  Also make sure the chain is aligned correctly.

How many miles do you have on the bike?

you jinxed me ya focker  :cussing: .  i hadn't rode the bike since last weekends big top end runs.  rode it and there was a clunking when i would put it in gear.  also clunking on 1-2 shift unless i slid the clutch.  also clunking when letting off gas and getting back on.  all this with mild riding.  the sound was coming from the cush area and the front sprocket.  i go home and pull the rear wheel off.  the cush rubbers were fine but the hub that bolts to the wheels and cush pushes into was loose.  these are RC component wheels.  i'm pretty sure this is it but haven't put it back together yet (might as well clean good while apart).  i can't believe this happened after you posted this  :?   :duh:

Sorry dude it wasn't me.Maybe our bikes were made at the same plant on
the same day.Go figure.............
