Why is my Turbo Busa so hard to launch?
« on: November 01, 2005, 03:11:09 AM »
Lowered 1.2 front, 2.5-3 rear. 230 hp, Stock clutch, stretched 4.5", stock shock. 18/40 gearing.

On a good launch my best 60 was .174 and 9.96/9.94.

I wanted to go down one in front but was told most don't and use the same gearing I"m using.

I shift into fouth about 150ft from the finish.

I try to launch at 5k rpms, maybe a bit higher, doesn't allways work out, boggs outta the hole then boosts. But that gets me a shitty 60 ft.

I'm using a shinko 003, about an 8 second burnout seems about right, 16psi, at the end of the night I went down to 15. I started at 13psi and it gripped too much so I went up to 16 and then down a little.

Hmmm...

My first time I only ran a best of 9.5 at 156 with a 1.6 60ft and thats what I was running stock well only 147-149 mph. It looks like for me anyway its just going to take some practice but we will get there. I was running stock gearing though 17-40 other than that I have bout the same setup 4.0 longer and lowered about 260-270 hp right now. I am also running a shinko at about 15psi that worked good for me also. I need more practice is all.

I tried doing a shorter burn out and launched at higher rpm and just blew the tire away.

I would do a burnout, then dry hop the bike before you stage.  This will let you know if the tire is sticky enough. You may have to experiment with this to find the correct tire temp.

The basic technique for leaving on a turbo is to "wing" the throttle...get the compressor spinning so you dont bog and so the compressor is spinning fast enough to leave in boost.

At 250hp, the Shinko should have no probs hooking, even on a poorly prepped track.  I think the low tire psi might become an issue when you start hooking hard as it could spin the wheel faster than the tire.  :D

You should leave with the turbo spooling, try launching at 7-8k just slip the clutch out of the hole.

It's hard enough to launch a turbo bike. With a stock clutch?

I would try what Boosted is saying.
Try leaving at about 6-7k, and "slide the cltuch out slowly, while rolling the throttle wide open. By the time you get to the xmas tree, you should be full throttle, and the clutch should be all the way out.

Just be prepared to buy a lot of clutches when you start getting it right...

Oh yeah, and BE CAREFUL! If you're not smooth slipping the clutch, she'll start to wheelie on ya.

PROBLEM IS YER GEARING
ITS TALL FOR DRAGRACING
YER BOGGING CAUSE YA LET THE CLUTCH OUT ALL THE WAY TOO EARLYYA NEEDED TO SLIDE IT LONGER TILLL YER INTO ENOUGH RPM
OR JUST DROP 1 OFF THE FRONT AND GO UP 2 IN REAR
17 42 ILL MAKE IT ALOT EASIER

Just updated my '01 clutch to the newer stuff.  Definitely did help, but it's not easy.
Some of the TMH springs helped me alittle too.

You have to leave at a higher rpm so you have some sort of load on thge turbo when you leave, if you have a smaller turbo then try starting out with 7000rpm.

I gotta stg II (Velocity) setup with a multistage lockup and I leave around 9k but Im also at 70 inches, my best 60ft is a 1.44 thats with a MCR2 M/T and I weigh 240 lbs in street clothes, my gearing is 18/45.  I leave at 8lbs of boost, then 15 in second, 20 in third, that got me a 5.36 in the eighth mile 138.78 mph.

I have a 17 I can put on.

Do it.  Just my opinion - you have something with a stock clutch, anything you can do to drive through the clutch quicker will help you.  Take gear off til you can't control it, then back up one.
