Front Axle Remover Hex Drive for $.83 at Home Depot
« on: January 06, 2006, 08:08:58 PM »
I went to Home Depot and bought a large 5/8 interior thread size coupling that is 2" long and has an EXTERIOR hex size of 15/16 ths.  It fits the front axle nut PERFECTLY, with NO SLOP.  I think it is better than the 15/16th bolt with two (2) 15/16 ths nuts on the end, but I bought that also.

The coupling is part # 2627.

For the bolt, I chose a 3" with a 5/8 thread bolt # 2696 for $.66, and the nuts were # 2596 for $.23 each.  Each has a 15/16 ths head.

Fits and works great.  Thanks to everyone that gave me the idea for this.

Walt

The local hardware store didn't have that stuff in stock when I needed to pull my front wheel so I just bought two nuts and welded them together. I ground the weld down smooth and painted it up after I was done and it looks good for the money i put into it. Doesn't look as nice as the threaded rod coupler but I didn't have a choice.

Sure beats the hell out of the approximate 30 dollars they want for their genuine tool.

Excellent idea for a front wheel removal tool...

I made one by welding a socket to an old LS1 crankshaft pulley bolt, but the threaded coupler from Home Depot would've been easier.

Damn, wish I would have known that about 1 1/2 months ago. I guess that's $17 that I'll never see again. Thanks for the info though, hopefully no one else will have to loose money for a part that should have been included in our tool kits :x.

I have to pick up a couple of things from Home Depot tomorrow (Re-doing my Diningroom). I'll take a look and see if they have them. If so, I'll pick up a few extra.

They are all the same size if the same style front axle.

I think the 01 back has a outy and the 02 up has a inny :D

I used to work for fastenal and i just checked there site

theirs are
5/8-11 x L2-1/8 x A13/16 Coupling Nut Zinc Plated

the one I got form Home depot must be of the 13/16 variaty than the 15/16 ones

Yep Doogie the home depot around here also only has 13/16 ones, I just welded a couple of nuts onto a bolt that was 15/16
and it works fine for me :thumb:
