The Fat Lady Has Sung the ZX-14
« on: February 04, 2006, 11:43:50 AM »
We all know that there are at least three or four ZX 14's in the US that have been placed in the hands of trusted and established allies of Kawasaki to test and evaluate......probably with the goal of fine tuning marketing and promotional material as it is too late to make "hard" changes. I also am led to believe that these Kawasaki allies have been asked to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure that all information is released at the time of the March introduction and in a orderly, coherent manner. Gadson, Adams and Muzzy all have one. In parallel, German distributors are releasing Kawasaki provided brochures which provide some hard numbers on the power output of the highly anticipated bike................192 PS or 190 HP(SAE) at the crank. This does not include any claims about ram-air which I am sure will creep into varous marketing publications to further boost advertised power claims. If we work with the 190 HP, we can expect the bike to dyno test at the rear wheel right around 167 HP on pump gas and somewhere close to 174 SAE on MRX01. Add a good pipe and Power Commanander, and you could be in the neighborhood of 185 HP (SAE)..........and if you jack-up the reference standard to STD you are approaching 190 HP. Before the arguments start, I have received indepent corroboration that the 167 HP (SAE) is a solid number for an engine with few miles and no adjustments. What does this mean? In basic terms, I think the ZX-14 will wallop a stock Busa and run close to even with a stock bore Busa with compression, cams, headwork, pipe, PC and good tuning. With the pipe and PC and MRX01, a SWB ZX-14 should be expected to run in the very low 9's at speeds in the 151 to 154 MPH range.

I am curious how the torq is going to play out, where in the rpm band they will make there peak hp and if its going to be smooth or jump up hard after 7k. I cant imagine them killing low end torq on a heavy production bike just to make a few more hp up top. This will be interesting to see, since its production they have alot of rules they have to contend with, sound, emmisions, yadda yadda, so if they are putting down close to 170 rwhp with only 50 more cc and staying withen the production rules I will give them props on it.

Zookman on here has ran 9.2's@152 on his 04 Busa, piped geared pc3 and lowered, So I doubt it whallop a busa, Most importantly, and the reason I would not have another bike other  than a busa for what I do, Is the clutch on a Busa has got to be the best clutch made for drag racing of all the crotch rockets I have seen, I have buddies with12's that cant't go to the track but 2 or 3 times and they have to replace the clutches, same with the newer 1000's. While I have other buddies with 10,000 miles on the stock clutch that drag race every week, My bike is close to that with stock clutches and is turbo'd (MH heavy springs)
I hope the Zx-14 is all that, since we all win from strong competition. But for the soon to be owners of the bike I hope that Kaw put a decent clutch in the thing!

I think from all the people i have seen racing cycles in the last 2 years that Zookman rides MUCH better than average and is MUCH lighter than most of us casual racers.  With that being said the average ZX14 / Busa race on the street or track with similar mods with give the ZX14 then win 90% of the time.  It will make almost identical numbers as a 1363 (similar cc's so makes sense) and 1363 / 1397 bikes will trounce a bolt on Busa in roll ons with same weight / skill level riders.

These 14's will roll - period!

I really hope this was anticipated by Suzuki and the 07 model Busa will have the solution to this aweful green disease...

I don't have the numbers and specs at hand, but the bore/stroke characteristics of the Kawasaki engine has changed dramatically and is now much closer to the Busa; most of the 150cc increase in displacement has come about through stroke. I think it will have a very linear power band and feel more like a Busa than a 12R. Power has increased from 180 at the crank to 190........up 5.5%. RPM's are down to 11,000....a decrease of 8.3%. And displacement has increased to 1352.........up 12.6%. Lots of tradeoffs.

Come on guys. Fire up the old brain cells. Kawa did this when the ZX12 was released. They sent 2 ringer bikes to Muzzy. They ran some pretty quick times and the word got out but no one was ever able to reproduce those numbers with a stock ZX12. I have no doubt that the ZX14 will be quick but if it weighs in at 600lbs then that power will be moot.

i for one won't get too excited over manufacturer's hype.

lets see what the bikes can do when they are in the hands of average joes.

Got to agree withh Gazza on this one. Just think when Kwaka brought out the zx12 they were doing the zx9. Now they build the zx10. It's easy to see they are cranking things up a bit.

Im goin with dark on this one. On my best calculations I said the same no more than 170 at best SAE on a good air day with the numbers uncorrected you can see another 6-9 hp would put the numbers right where they are claiming. Alittle tuning a pipe theres 10 more almost 190hp from a stock bike. If it does weight as much as they are saying, as it comes from the showroom with around an average of 170 hp it will run 9 teens with a good jockey. 150 mph.... I would say that is realistic. Think about it, you know that they will drop the ball on either the tranny, clutch, or there crappy oiling. Once it goes through the steps of working the bugs out it will definetly run....

My guess is 9 teens at 153plus mph(piped and tuned)......when the 12 came out in 2000 ..i ran 9.35 at 153mph and another 9.35 at 155mph and it would run 9.40 at 150plus in the heat anywhere with me at 165pounds unsuited(at that time lol).Dynoed at 181hp with mr1(174 gas pump) and some tuning.AKRO pipe 4up in the rear footshifting.KEITH used to go all the time low 30's on it at 152mph or more in the worse conditions....i also had a busa at the same time.Sold the 12 cause i hated the damn weak clutch and the bike was a pain to work on.

The busa will always remain the best bike to mod.

But will it top out higher than a stock 'Busa with the speed limiter removed?  Power being proportional to speed cubed, hp gets eaten up quickly by wind resistance.  Any information on the ZX14's aerodynamics??

No matter how much power and how fast they claim it to be, it is not an attractive bike. Same as the 12 it still looks like a pain to turbo. I can't wait for them to hit the street.
If it don't go, chrome it!

I THINK 167 SAE IS TOO LOW
JUDGING BY DESIGN ETC I WOULD SAY THAT IT WILL BE IN THE 175-180  SAE HP RANGE BONE STOCK AND MIDTO UPPER  180S W PIPE AND MAPPED
