Lowering a 2004 GSXR1000 for a 5'2" rider?!?!?!?
« on: February 05, 2006, 11:10:18 PM »
I'm in the process of building a 650 HP Turbo Busa and buying a 500HP BUSA.  So since she has been such a good sport, I'm giving my finace my 2004 AMA Superstock 180 HP GSXR1000.  The problem is she is 5'2" and 105#!!!!

I have lower links and I can have the shocks lowered and slide them up in the triple tree to lower them.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO!?!?!?!?!?

What about lowering the seat???  Having the seat cut and lowered, who does that?  Contact infor???

Any ideas on making this bike more ridable for her.

I know some may say, get a 600.  But the 1k is so close in size, it doesn't matter.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.
Joey

I have the Schnitz adjustable kickstand.  I have lowering links.

What do you guys think of having TRAC shorten the forks?  They did a set for a BUSA forks for me, came out sweet.  Do you think they will help?

I actually have a cut drag seat somewhere around here - it's just the stock seat pan with most of the foam cut away. If I can find it, it's yours (for free, of course) - give it a shot. I definitely FELT 2" lower in the saddle with that.

Thanks SuperGrizz!!!! My fiance will greatly appreciate it, so a seat 2" lower would be a life saver.  I agree with your thoughts on shortening forks, lose too much travel.

Anyone know how far you can saftly drop the front by sliding the forks threw the triple tree??

What do you guys think of gearing???  Right now I have 1 down up front 17 tooth, but w/ 180 HP and 1,500 rpm higher rev limit, I feel may be dangerous for a 5'2"/105# rider?!?!?!?!?  I'm thinking of going back to stock gearing?

Did I mention this will be the first street bike she has riden.  By the way she handles a dirt bike and 4wheeler, I am not worried about her riding ability.  My first Jap bike was a Hayabusa, after 2 days I was riding like it was a 250 Ninja.  I personally think it's good to learn on a very powerful bike, makes you better much sooner.  IMOA.

I would certainly get the forks cut.  You might need to check on the adjustable kickstand...after I lowered the bike, the stand (Schnitz adjustable) was still to long.  I ended up cutting my stand in order for it to work properly. 8)

You think the shorter forks will be OK for street driving???  Don't forget she is only 5'2" and only like 100#, so I don't know how much travel is needed.  Shorter forks may be the way too go!!!

Joey,

If she knows how to ride just put the links on and slide the forks up ~3/4" to start.....Put the stock gearing on it and let her ride it....Most customers I lower bikes for(new riders) are fine after some seat time...and sometimes ask me to raise it back up.

Raising the forks in the tubes may be best for the time being.  My forks are cut and I have no problems on the street and I weigh 200 lbs and put over 5K miles on my bike last year.  I just didn't like the way the bike looked so I got them cut (just my personal preference).

I think the pipe will hit before the pan?/and a straight link is the Shock link but a aftermarket one thats allow a different angle for the arm, shock ect..I personally don't think yiou need one for this bike right now for Her..

You will be able to get it pretty low using the above methods..

yup, then remove the seat and take the staples out of the back side of it, foam comes right out, put staples back in....then ride about 3 in lower...

I'm interested in knowing if it is a comfortable ride after the padding is taken out....    Great idea...  Let me know how it goes...

straight link will get you about 1 1/2" more ground clearance when getting really low.
