New Metzeler Sportec M3 Tires - Holy Shite They Stick!
« on: July 18, 2006, 09:22:42 AM »
OK, I have to share.

I researched and wanted to run Metzelers again, because they served me so well before on other bikes.

Apparently, Metzeler redesigned the M3 to replace the current M1 with a stickier, longer wear tire. (The current M1 is going to be redesignated the M8 or something) The new M3 claims 40% more grip and 50% more wear, due to having Silica in the rubber. It runs cooler, so the rubber can be stickier without scrubbing off so fast. The circumferential belt heats the entire tire up in only 2 miles (3km) according to their specs.

All I know is I flicked my bike over on both sides yesterday way over a buck and it was so solid I felt like I could have gone twice as fast around those corners!

When I got home, I felt the tires and they were SO sticky I was amazed! They felt like race tires after a hot lap! My wife walked up and I was explaining to her how great they were. She did not quite understand so I stuck one of my business cards to the edge of the tire where it was vertical and it stayed, heck it might still be there, it was last night!

I encourage any of you canyon riders to look into these tires. Check it:

I've had them on my bike since May and agree...they work great.

I do not know how much stuff they pick up, but I do know that when I roll my bike out the next day, there are frequently rocks still stuck to the vertical surfaces, not embedded, like they are levitating.  8)

In 19K miles of riding my Busa the M3s are the best mountain riding tires I have fitted. Love em. I was dragging knees on my last trip to The Dragon.

I wrote my experience with my first set of them in a post in Oct 06 - "New Tires and Chain Noise". I couldn't figure out how to cut and past it here. I sold the bike before having more than 2,000 on them, but no wear noticable at all by then. The main handling feature I noticed over the M1s was the neutral and stable feeling in high speed corners.

I've had 2 sets of these tires and they hold up too......I have actually gotten around 4-5k out of them on the rear and my front now has 9k on it......yes...I'm due for both tires but hey...So far these are the best tires for stick and mileage that I have ever seen....with no burnouts they will last I have 15.5k on the odo now and most of this is on the m3

If they are as good as the M1's that is what I will be using.  I have M1's on my ZX12R and I really like them.   Much better than the Dunslops I had on before..

UPON FUTHER REVIEW...I decided I dont like the M3s that much  .I got longer life from the M1s and they are plenty sticky enough for the street.

M3's are definitely stickier than M1's, and do wear a little faster than an M1.

The silica in the rubber helps them remain stickier while running cooler, so they do last longer than a comparable tire of same stickiness.

I like to drag my knee on the street, so they work great for me. Take a look.

Gotta disagree.  The most mileage I ever got out of an M1 on the rear of a 125-130 hp '01 ZRX was 3500 miles.  I just had to replace an M3 that still had 300-400 miles left before hitting the wear bars because I was going on a 1500 mile trip.  At that point, the tire had 4400 miles on it, or a 30+% mileage increase.

I don 't drag a knee, but my tires get wear to the edge of the tread.  I probably never got into the last ten % of traction on the M1, so I couldn't say that the M3 has more traction.  I did notice the stickiness of the rubber at rest, especially after relatively high speed runs.

My fourth flat in 49 months was on the new '07 'busa with about 450 miles on it in October.  I just fitted an O.E.M. Bridgestone, but when this tire wears out, a set of M3s are going on.

I used 2 set of rennsports..no traction for me..

Now I'm using a set of 208 GpRacer M front and H rear..a new world.. I've posted a video here http://www.suzukihayabusa.org/forum/index.php?topic=125219.0  done with the Gpracer..

I don't even like the supercorsas.. The rigidity of the front dunlop gives an amazing precision on the 'busa on aggressive road driving.

I have about 1000 miles on my M3's and the look like new.  . I think the are  great tires.  Much nimbler handling and stick like glue.  Turnin is much quicker too.
