Your thoughts on big motors 1500+
« on: July 26, 2006, 08:12:52 AM »
I am just trying to work out what sort of motor that you guys like to use for the strip :?:

1500, 1560, 1600+

What cranks are popular with the guys at the track ( 1/4 )

I don't want to use NOS or any power adders....just all motor

The class that we have down here is an all motor, stock arm, dot tyres

Street bike class. At the moment all the old EFE's that run 1500+cc. :(

hold all the records. I want to try and get a reliable  big block that I can

take out and run to try and get some wins on ( and may be a record or 2 )

I haven't bin posting up much on here, just have bin doing a lot of reading and it looks like

the 5mil crank is a good deal..... 8)

Your thoughts..........Thanks for looking...

Regards Richard.... :D

Send Dave O some $ for his, he recently went 220mph at Maxton! He's the resident big motor guru.

There are some big motors living with 1/4 use....up to 1700cc. The biggest factor is NOT just the components....it is the person doing the build/tune.

IMO more than 5mm stroke should use a billet crank........

and even with Billet cranks have them crack tested more often than not. Weld ups have them crack tested often.
Try to run std length rods too

Garry when you say  "Try to run std length rods too" should I look for better rods at stock length?

and then use a spacer plate or try and squeeze it in there and run the bigger cam chain?

I was looking at going for the 6 1/2mil crank but may just settle for the 5mil instead :?

any one else got any thing to ad...........thanks for the input

User our cranks, and have it set up by someone who knows this stuff. We can supply your crank with stock length Carrillo rods already installed. Ready to drom into the cases.

Thanks Jay...What is the difference in cost betwen the two cranks with  Carrillo rods :?:

5mil vs 6 1/2mil................can you give me a shipping cost to get one sent Down under

and is worth me getting one out rite, the cost of shipping my crank back to the US

will just about make it to costly ( I think ) :?

Thanks for the help....

A stroker has some upsides as well as some challenges. Learn about rod ratio and things will become a bit more clear and you will better understand mechanical advantage, piston speed and side wall loading. Rods shorter than stock will only aggravate many of the problems associated with strokers. I will defer to DaveO and Gazza on assembly as I have not built one but I would look for advice on case preparation, clearances and oiling modifications to ensure engine geometry and bearing film integrity. I would defer to Jay on the crank integrity and strength of weld-ups but I would not be afraid to go to 6 1/4 with a stock length rod..............this has to with rod ratio, mechanical advantage and stress. The bottom line, in my mind you can go to a 6 1/4 weld-up with stock length Carrillos providing you carefully follow the preparation and assemble guidelines typically followed by builders with a proven track record. Beyond 6 1/4, I would go to a billet product.

Thanks for that, I was talking with an engine builder ( cars ) and was told that a rod stroke ratio of 1.7 ( which is what the small block Chev has )

is spot on for V8. Is this the same for a 4Cly or is there another rod ratio that suits the Busa motor better. :?

Still getting my head around all of this and getting the right info to run a big motor  8)

Garry are you interested in putting one together.......
