41 or 42 rear?
« on: August 07, 2006, 05:47:54 PM »
I am looking for a little more down low but don't want to kill the fuel mileage and I do alot of highway riding but around town I think the gearing is too low.  On the highway at 4500 rpm I can get 85 mph and I think that is a nice match speed vs rpm.  I did a search and found the speed caculator and I am unsure if I should go 41 or 42.  Is the 41 tooth enough of a step up to notice and to get alittle more down low?  Or is the 42 a better sprocket since both are same price?  Bike is stock except for a HMF 4-1 and a TRE, small box mod and pair removal.  Thanks for the help.

Been running 41 for years. It depends what type of ridding you are looking for. I do more sport touring than anything else. High speed runs every now and then. Did not want to take away my top end to much. This is what gives the Busa bragging rights.

I was running the 17/43 also, great gear for n/a motor. Today I switched back to the 40, makes a huge difference with the turbo. makes use of all that HP up top, really gave it some legs.

I know you guys gonna say me crazy. I have Gixxer k2 rims on it with 520 conversion. 17T front and carbon coated AFAM 41T rear. Before, I used to have stock 530chain 17/42. With the current set-up, I feel faster and light without off setting my fuel mileage, aero dynamic and top speed. Thinking of 520chain 18T/43T for the next change.
My bike is mainly set for street and track. Using the strongest 520chain available DID double Gold rated. My bike RWHP is estimated around 175+-. I am aiming at around 185-190 with some head works, performance cams and with counter off balanced shaved crank. Yet to proceed.

Personally, I am contented with the set-up. I had clocked 5,000miles on it and it did not gives me a single problems at all.
